Swim
Comments: Time out of the water was ~11 min. Kind of a weird swim. Got off to a fast start for the first 200, but started accidentally veering left. Corrected and headed over to the lead group. Then we ran into the M40-45 stragglers in front of us and it was pure chaos. Got off course a couple of times and generally just struggled to get through the melee. For some reason I felt like I was in the water forever today. I just wanted to be done with this swim and get on the bike. What would you do differently?: Find some fast feet and stick there. I could have done this swim a little faster today, just poor navigation in the water. I liked the new bigger buoys for this race though, much easier sighting. Transition 1
Comments: Felt pretty fast through this transition, even though the time doesn't really reflect it. The only snag was that the ear flap on my Rudy Syton SuperComp helmet came off, and instead of trying to get it back on, I pulled the other one off. Didn't cost much time, just annoyed me. What would you do differently?: Nothing really, just need to practice so that everything goes super smooth. Bike
Comments: Really solid ride. Felt good right away on the bike. Didn't try to hold anything back or spin up the legs, just started pushing right out of transition. Had a few minutes on the first few rollers coming out of the res where my breathing was ragged, but then caught up and settled in and really pushed well over the rest of the course. I decided to race this one without a HRM or bike computer, just to go on feel and see how things went. I'm not sure I liked it really any better or worse. I hit my goal time, so I'm certainly happy with that, but biking is kind of funny for me because I always get done with a race and wonder if I could have gone harder. Maybe the HRM would have given me comfort that my heart rate was red-lined the whole way. Undecided on this one. What would you do differently?: Maybe next year I'll race it with the HRM just to see. Transition 2
Comments: Also felt fast in this one, but the time doesn't really reflect it. What would you do differently?: Need to practice transitions. Run
Comments: Really never felt it on the run today. Out of T2 the first little hill felt crappy. Me legs felt okay, just felt like I was breathing way too hard and not finding a rhythm. Felt good between about mile 1 and 2.5, but then just dragged into the line. Should have been faster here, but still, a massive improvement since last year, so I can't complain. What would you do differently?: Need more bricks in training. Post race
Warm down: Nothing. Crossed the finish line and Dills was standing there talking to Bret (who DNF'd after shredding his tire). We chatted for a minute and drank water, then headed straight for the beer tent. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of brick training, poor navigation on the swim, felt a little hot and thirsty on the run, kind of slow in transition. But those are really some pretty nitpicky points considering I improved 5 minutes since last year and really blazed the course today. I'm very happy with this race overall, and even though I'm a little discouraged that 1:15 doesn't get me anywhere near the podium in this AG, I had a great time. Event comments: I love the Boulder series and had a great time today. Always fun to see basically every triathlete I know from Colorado come out to race on the same day.
