Pre-race routine:

got up and had coffee and a bananna, woke Phillip and we got dressed and went to the race. It was only 9 miles from the house so no hurry to get there. Walked around trying to stay warm.
Event warmup:

Jogged in place and jumped up and down a few times.

Comments:

I had thought the route was pretty level but my elevation profile proves otherwise. Mostly downhill on the way out and up on the return. We started out faster than originally planned and hit the half way point in 27 minutes (thats a 5k PR for me as well). The turnaround sent us back uphill and that hill kicked my butt a little. My HR got up too high on the way back in and I had to dial it down. I knew I was on the way to a PR if I maintained 10 min miles on the 2nd half so I was ok.

Phillip (my 14 yo son) ran beside me for the first two miles and decided to take off about mile 2.5. He ended up beating me to the finish line by about 2 minutes. He has bragging rights for awhile. We did not stay for the awards but I think he might have some hardware coming if last years results in his age group are any indication.

Update: Phillip took 3rd in his age group!!!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe started out a little slower and tried to negative split the race. This is 5 minutes faster than my previous best 10k time so I am estatic about the time.

Make sure my son brings his own gloves so I don't have to give him mine. I had made a trip to WalMart to get us both some cheap gloves and he left his sitting on the kitchen counter.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, had water, bananna, and some starbucks coffee.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

age, weight, genetics

Event comments:

Last year at this time my son and I were debating if we should do the 5k or the fun run and I remember telling him I did not think I could run 3 miles. We ended up not running at all due to illness. This year was a debate over wether we did the 10k or the half marathon. We both set personal bests in the 10k. A year makes a lot of difference.
