Swim
Comments: I really think swim class paid off. I felt strong the whole way. Of course, I had to pee the moment I got in the pool. I promptly forgot about that as the swimming started. I actually passed the guy in front of me a couple of laps in. The swimmers in front of him were fast, so I got to swim in ALOT of unpopulated pool. SWEET! What would you do differently?: Just keep with the classes and work on speed and endurance. Transition 1
Comments: LONG RED BIKE RUN from swim to transition. I didn't bring any shoes worthy of putting on my feet to get from the pool building to transition. I was a little nervous about the feet and the knees and any negative impact the run might have on them ... but it wasn't bad. Got my socks and shoes on the correct feet! YAY! Ran with Bridget to the mounting line ... and could NOT get clipped in ... not for nothing ... I've stood and practiced clipping in and out and in and out ... but no ... it took three tries to get started. What would you do differently?: Clip in like it wasn't totally alien to me? Bike
Comments: Wow. Flat isn't always flat ... and motorists don't always do the right thing when there are cyclists on the road ... no news flashes there. I was afraid I went too hard in the beginning, but I thought it through towards the end of the race ... adjusted my gearing and made sure I got some good spinning in at the end to get my legs flushed out good. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder. Drink more. Transition 2
Comments: Was still able to think at this point. Knew I hadn't had enough hydration on the bike, so I took the moment to swig some extra water before I headed out. It was worth the couple of seconds it took. What would you do differently?: I am not sure I'd change anything. It went pretty smoothly. I love sport beans. Run
Comments: The run felt pretty good. It took me a good half mile or more to get my legs together, but once they were again willing to work with the rest of my body I was able to get into a decent groove. Of course, I couldn't get my knee brace on over wet/damp legs, so I was a little concerned about what would happen to my legs after running on sidewalks ... but adrenalin was apparently handling it for the time being. I managed to start my interval timers on my watch and followed my run/walk plan the whole way. Had to run amongst a bunch of students and parents on campus for some kind of recruiting thingy ... they SO did not want to recognize ... but I was undaunted! SO many people were encouraging me to smile and keep going ... the other people being racers ... not so much the students and their folks. ;) In the end, I was very pleased with the pace. I was able to hold myself under 12 min/mi even after the swim and bike! YAY! What would you do differently?: Run faster? Sumo wrestler bounce myself off of the potential UNCW students and their family members? Post race
Warm down: Nuthouse was there yelling for me at the finish! THAT was AWESOME! (hope his wife feels better ... hate I didn't get to meet her and the fam) Grabbed something for hydration purposes ... and a little recovery food ... stood at the finish to cheer on NCTriNewbie as she came in. Stretched a little ... should have done more. Grabbed a shower and hit the road for Raleigh. I had places to be ... REALLY crazy people to assist ... the Umstead 100 competitors are NUTS!!! What limited your ability to perform faster: Excess weight. Drive. I may never get race bling, but I'll be happy if I can keep shaving little bits of minutes off of this time. Event comments: I'd love to do this race again, but they're talking about switching it with MAP ... and I'm not sure that won't be just too early for me. :( It was a fabulous first triathlon experience! Swim time was 10:31.30, so we had plenty of time for the pre-race stuff. Got to the site in time to pick up timing chip, get Bridget into transition, set up transition, walk around, check transition again, watch the elites start, watch more elites start, study swim strokes, check transition again. Ran into nuthouse, DMarkSwan and his friend DavidbutyoucancallmeBilly. Cheered nuthouse on at the end of his swim. NCTriNewbie and I had grabbed a bagel at the hotel, so after that ... a couple of Diet Cokes and plenty of water ... I had to pee. Again. And again.
See above reference to walking around ... socializing ... and going to the restroom. After that, I swam a couple of real easy laps in the diving pool and got in line. Talked to the people in line with me ... promised everyone that I'd relinquish my position if they needed to pass ... just tap me on the heel and I'd yield. I thought through my lane changes ... a little visualization to get my mind right. Then just kinda jumped up and down in the water until it was my time to start.
