Pre-race routine:

Packed everything the night before. Ate two bowls of cereal on race morning, aired the bike tires, filled the bottles and left my house on my bike.
Event warmup:

I rode to the race on my bike, so that was my warmup. It's about 5 miles, so it wasn't great, but it was good enough. I did not look at a weather report before I left, so I went to the race in my sexy shorty shorts and froze my ass off riding to the race before the sun had come up.
Swim
  • 17m 8s
  • 400 yards
  • 04m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

It is worth noting that I had planned on the pool having a shallow end that I could walk through. It did not and I was forced to actually swim the whole 400 yards :(

I was the slowest swimmer in my age group by a large margin. This confirms what I already know: I need to swim more.

It is also worth noting that this was a reverse tri, and as such the swim was the last thing to do. This is perhaps the most jackass idea I have ever heard of, short of nuclear war.
What would you do differently?:

Given my lack of swimming preparation I think I executed fairly well. I was pretty tired by the time I hopped into the pool, and that actually gave me a better (feeling) form. I felt more fishlike and my legs weren't in motorboat mode, which usually is the cause of my tiredness when I swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

This is totally confusing. Since this is a reverse tri and the RR form is treating it like a normal tri, things are out of order. For the purposes of this RR, I'm calling "T1" the first transition, from run to bike.

I was very relaxed and took my time. I said a exchanged a few brief words with Laurie, and tossed my crap on and started riding.
What would you do differently?:

Eh, I don't know. I wasn't trying to be fast, and I wasn't. I'll need to practice transitions a bit more as I start doing races I care more about.
Bike
  • 50m 9s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.95 mile/hr
Comments:

So I won't say I killed the bike by any means, but I was 4th in my AG (*edit* they updated the standings with T2 times and I'm 3rd!), which was sorta neato. I greatly disliked the course, but the bike is too much fun to let that get me down. I didn't really destroy myself on it (because I knew the bastard swim was ahead of me). I spent a bit more time out of the saddle than I have in the past (accelerating out of sharp turns and climbing small hills into the wind). I really had alot of fun on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I'm going to focus on lowering my ridiculously high cadence and start mashing bigger gears, which I think will only make me faster on the bike. I didn't really do anything wrong on the bike, but I probably didn't drink enough because I was so thirsty during the swim portion that I knowingly drank the pool water.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Another confusing portion of the RR. I'm counting T2 as the transition from bike to swim. I moved a bit faster here, racked the bike threw my crap on the ground and took off with my goggles in hand.
What would you do differently?:

Should have taken one last swig of water, for the next 17 minutes of my life would be liquid hell.
Run
  • 30m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Holy crap! I just ran with John and made fun of people the whole time, and it hurt me pretty badly in the standings. Honestly I don't think I could've run much faster if I had wanted to though; I started to fade in the last kilometer which speaks for my lack of training in the past months. It was still a very enjoyable run all in all.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. There was no water on the course, which is fine for a 5k I guess, but it would have been nice. I'm capable of running faster than 30:22, especially once I lose a little weight, so I'm optimistic about future races.
Post race
Warm down:

I did some light stretching and mostly stood around bullshitting with the BTers. I did have to lie to a girl on guard duty to let me into the transition area after I finished. I left my towel in there (for a good reason!) and I wanted to get it, so I told her I needed my heart medicine and it was in my transition bag! Owned.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I spent alot of time and oxygen yelling at the refs. I can understand how many might view this in a negative light, but allow me a moment to clarify: this race was total crap. No water on the run, an awful bike course and the most anti-climatic race finish of all time... for $65 bucks! (btw John I'll pay you back real soon) Thats far more expensive than many other races of a much higher caliber.

As such I felt it was my duty to protest the race by wearing my iPod and listening to music during both the run and the bike. It was apparent that Big Kahuna RP felt it more important to pay like 874 ref's than it was to provide water on the run, so I kept being told to take off my headphones. My typical response was "they're ear warmers, not headphones!" This did not go over well with many refs.

Leaving T1 I was told to take them off as I got on the bike. I just rode past the lady that yelled at me and told her "I don't have anywhere to put them but my ears! I promise I won't listen to this music on my iPod!"

And finally during a left turn on the bike a girl told me to take them off, to which I simply reponded "DQ me."

I was not DQ'ed though its very possible that all this talk robbed me of precious oxygen and performance. I plan to avoid this problem in the future by going to races that don't suck balls and thus not wear my headphones and thus not yell at refs, whom normally I greatly appreciate and respect.

Event comments:

I say "no" to plenty of volunteers because I was talking to a girl after the race (imagine that!) and she told me they were all getting paid by Big Kahuna. The only volunteers I saw were a bunch of HS cheerleaders that didn't really do much work.

Its obvious that I don't think highly of the race as an event, but I did have much fun competing and a very enjoyable time with BTers old and new alike.

I look forward to many more races this year!

Course: Course was moderately flat around northern Allen. It varied from smooth asphalt to chip-sealed crap to parking lot concrete. A tri course should be like a TT course: straight and fast. This course had us cutting through a bank's parking lot (and the deadly gauntlet of drive-thru death), among other oddities. The wind was a bit of a bitch too.
