Pre-race routine:

First race -- couldn't sleep much. Up at 4:00; picked up friend, Andrew and to the check-in by 5:45 a.m.
Event warmup:

Walked around checking out the "in" and "out" sections of the course.
Swim
  • 28m 45s
  • 984 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Stayed with my friend Laraine. It was her first OWS and I knew how tough it would be. I'm glad I stayed with her and helped her through it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Oh wait. Did I mention that I bought new goggles on Wednesday and broke a top triathlon rule? (Don't do anything new on race day) I know you are all chuckling now...they are great goggles (visibility is outstanding) but I didn't have them fit right and they leaked like a sieve at times. Curses! You were all right!!!
Transition 1
  • 04m 47s
Comments:

I thought I was well prepared but it didn't translate into decent transition times.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 18s
  • 14.91 miles
  • 14.59 mile/hr
Comments:

Slow getting moving. Tried to gauge the amount of effort to "leave something for the run". Next time I will go out harder.

Several people crashed at the turn-around points. Glad I wasn't involved.

The volunteers were great!
What would you do differently?:

Train for more speed.
Transition 2
  • 04m 30s
Run
  • 40m 53s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Running is hard for me. I was determined not to walk and I only slowed down for water at the aid station. When I knew I would finish, I was soaring!
What would you do differently?:

Carry water/gatorade with me?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back up the hill to the car. Went to lunch with friends and family. Watched some video of it that night. SO cool!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being an athlete for the first 30 years of my life. :-) Still being overweight. Not pushing myself the way some insane hard-core people can. Not sure if I have that in me; or even want to. But I would like to improve with each race and continue to loose weight/become more fit.

Event comments:

Finishing a triathlon is a long way from being an overweight smoker -- that's why I am SO pleased with even my "below average" speeds and finish time. I've come a long way and it feels great!!!

The goal of this race was for the three of us to finish and we did and I couldn't be happier! What a great time we had.
