Pre-race routine:

Marcy did a local 5k Saturday morning. I went and watched then got packed. We drove over and stayed in Pensacola at the race hotel. The race started at 6:30 AM and didn't want to have to get up and drive over at 4:00AM. Met up with friends and had dinner at olive garden. In bed by 9 and slept good despite the trains.
Event warmup:

Woke up at 5:00AM, had a rice krispy treat and coffee. Went to friends rooma and we walked over to the race start about 3/4 miles away. It was bitter cold, i think 28 degrees with 15mph winds. My friends were doing the full marathon. I wore tights, an underarmour shirt, a bike shirt with pockets, and a sweatshirt. Also gloves, earwarmers, and a hat.

Comments:

I started with my 2 friends who were doing the full race. It was really cold as we were right on the water in a nasty wind. My pace was good from the beginning but the hills made my HR go a little higher than I expected. Left my friends in the 3rd mile and felt like I was on pace to hit goals. At the half way point I was at 1:10:20. I wanted 2:20 so I knew I need to pick up. Mile 8 crushed me, when I hit mile split it said 11:43. I was very upset and tried to rationalize that it was a bad marker. Oh well, I started pushing at this point but my ankle just wouldn't cooperate. I would get the speed up and then the pain would hit. I mile 12, I thought I had a chance but I missed the goal by 17 seconds. The last 1.1 on my GPS was 1.3 miles but you don't get to race on your gps distance. I enjoyed the crowd at the finish. I carried my amphipod and drank 2 bottles of water. Also had some powerade but didn't use my gue. Energy was great.
What would you do differently?:

I really raced my plan. The hills were a surprise but I thought I handled them fine. I race at 10 beats higher HR on the early laps but I had plenty of gas. Short of surgery, I don't think the ankle is gonna get much better. I am probably gonna stick to 10k or less the rest of the year. Looking back, I could have went out a little faster but thats guesswork now.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in the chair while they took off the chip. Marcy had brought the car over to the race site so I could ride back to the hotel. Ankle was swollen and I could hardly walk. Went back to hotel and laid in the tub. Then went back to watch friends finish marathon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my right ankle.

Event comments:

I got a PR by 2 minutes 52 so I am pretty happy. The race course was definitely the most challenging one I have ever done. Its advertised as flat and that was misleading. I still would have done it, but would have been smart to know the course better. The shirt was the nicest I have ever gotten in a race. Dry fit, blue and gray, very nice. Aid stations were well manned and stocked. The post race didn't have beer but did have plenty of food. No awards ceremony, but nice awards that people who win didn't have to wait long for.

My gps and the mile markers didn't agree very often but these are the splits based on the markers. 10:44 127 10:27 135 10:36 145 10:38 153 10:47 147 10:51 148 10:45 154 11:43 151 seems way off 10:33 153 10:32 152 9:48 153 this is too fast for that hr 10:46 155 10:22 164 1:27 171 that was way to slow, i was flying (lol)
Course: Marathon and half started together and split up at mile 5. The marathoners went 5 miles further at that point, then came back to our course. The course was extremely hilly. I had no idea there was this kind of terrain in Pensacola. My GPS has altitude data but i haven't figured out how to interpret it. The entire course had lots of climbing and descending.
