Overall Rank = 191/250

Age Group Rank = 11/17
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 430. Loaded up truck and headed out. Bagel with peanut butter and some cookies on the way to site. Had to set up 2 different TA's so this was an interesting experience. Had to make about 3 trip back to the truck to get things that I had forgotten
Event warmup:

With having to set up 2 TA's and travel 10-15 mins between sites, I didn't have time to do any real warmup
Swim
  • 35m 19s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent swim. I had really expected to be able to have the wetsuit for today, but it wasn't wetsuit legal. I struggled thru the swim even though I turned in a reasonable time. I did far more breast-stroke than I would have liked, but this was also a good chance to do some sighting. I probably swam an extra 150-200 yds because I kept swimming left of the course. This is weird because I kept swimming right at my last race (Cane Creek). Happy to survive this swim. I haven't been putting in the distance work that I needed to do to be ready for this race.
What would you do differently?:

More long swims, not miss so many swim days due to numerous excuses (some legit, some not :) )

Transition 1
  • 03m 44s
Comments:

Had a monster hill up from the lake to the TA. Walked it. Tried to run some but was mostly focusing on getting my HR back down so I'd feel better on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, overall was a pretty good transition
Bike
  • 1h 33m 34s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 17.93 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt my HR was too high early on, so my time suffered a little because of that. Got it under control eventually.

Nutrition went pretty well. Full bottle of Gatorade plus about half a bottle of water. 1/2 gel about Mile 3. Blocks at Mile 10. 1/2 Gel at Mile 20. Gel at Mile 25.

Have been having some gear issues when slowing down. Chain came off once about Mile 16 but spun it back on. Had another episode at Mile 25 but couldn't get it to spin back. Had to stop and untangle it.
What would you do differently?:

Better prep for this race. Had been doing plenty of long rides, but focused more on time than value. Should have been doing more strength workouts
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Felt like a nice quick TA. Short run to my bike rack and then long run to the exit point.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 05m 7s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt pretty decent considering the swim and bike's effects on my legs. Walked more than I would have like, but I think I still turned in a near PR for an outdoor 10k.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think I got in any true bricks over the last few weeks. Needed a few long ones to get the legs ready.
Post race
Warm down:

Awesome way to be meet by the first volunteer after removing your chip--chilled water bottle and a golf towel which had been dipped in any icy kiddie pool

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me

Event comments:

Challenging course and probably not the best choice for a first Oly. Pretty damn proud of myself overall. Revised my goal to 3:23:00 after having ridden the course the first time. Beat that goal and also beat a good friend who I consider a fitness stud. That made my day.

Well--I'd have HR data if my chest strap wouldn't have been left in my bag when I set up my 2nd TA.

Wind: Little
Course: 28 miles point to point. Most of this course was uphill but miles 2, 4, 8, 14, and 24 were the most noticeable. The first two are tough because you're still getting your legs under you. Mile 8 is about 1.5 miles long and a slow, steady grade. Mile 14 is as you enter the National/State park. Again, very low slow grade. Mile 24 is the worst hill of the whole course.

Duh--no HR monitor
Course: 2 laps out and back run. Guess the best way to describe the course is rolling. Almost all either up or down, very little flat. Having to run on sidewalk along Pfifer Road was annoying since both directions of travel were squeezed in together.
