Swim
Comments: Swim was excellent, but crowded. I've worked a lot on my swim over the winter and I think it paid off well. I maintained my stroke the entire way, even when in a crowd. I was touched, bumped, kicked, and completely swum over by a freaky fast swimmer from the next wave.. that was crazy, but I was ok with it. He did what he had to do, and he didn't push off me or anything, so.. i was ok with it. The distance felt a little longer than 1500 in the pool, but that might be because I had not done a tri in over 6 months to have real perspective. I exited the swim fine, checked my time, saw 27, and was happy with that. Now it was off to T1. What would you do differently?: Still get stronger. More intervals to gain speed, possibly some targeted weight work to gain strength. I can get faster. Transition 1
Comments: still not doing anything advanced here. Starting with my shoes on my feet rather than on my bike etc etc.. I sat down to get my wetsuit off, and had what felt like some trouble with the heels, but it didn't hurt my time too much. My rack position in transition helped the most.. I was first rack, right off the swim. In the sea of bikes that is St. Anthony's, that was a major positive. What would you do differently?: Still need work here. Mental and Physical preparation. Bike
Comments: Averaging 21.5 is the fastest bike speed I've averaged yet. I really hammered it. I was just refit on my bike a week earlier and that was an obvious help. I never lost power, and never really felt like I wasted any energy. First time for that too. I basically played back and fourth with one guy the whole way. Other than that, I passed 90 percent of the time, and was passed the other 10 percent. There were some really strong bikers out there. What would you do differently?: Work on my bike more. I can improve here the most. I do about 40 percent of what I should be doing training wise. Transition 2
Comments: Good.. put on socks. I don;t like racing with socks, but I got a blister about 4 weeks ago when I did treadmill intervals without socks, and I didn't want to take the chance here. It added time to T2, but probably saved some agony. What would you do differently?: Ensure my next pair of shoes does not have that irritating piece sticking out in the right shoe. :) Run
Comments: Good strong run for me after a strong bike. I was only passed by maybe 3 people. I could have done this a bit faster.. I know that for sure. Running is my strong event, and I want to keep it that way. My April running has been erratic at best, so there is reason for only doing a 47, but that's not acceptable. Waterstops were perfectly placed out there. The heat was intense, but not as bad as it must have been for those starting later. What would you do differently?: Maintain my training, and not let it fall off 4 weeks before a race like this. I did ING Georgia Marathon at the end of March, then fell off. I will probably do the same next year, but plan better for the change of focus that is needed when it comes to tri specific training. Also, hopefully not get sick so much next winter and spring. Post race
Warm down: That wonderful cold blue rag at the end was priceless. Grabbed a few waters and slammed those, then got a gatorade and sipped on that. I then headed over to the run exit and watched about 20 people that I knew head out on the run course. What limited your ability to perform faster: Slow down in training in April. Other than that, nothing. Event comments: Excellent race. I give organization an A+. A fun and friendly environment, with lots of athletes of all abilities. Hoping to do this one as often as possible. It's a great way to kick off the season. Last updated: 2007-02-15 12:00 AM

Going back to saturday, I did a 1200 meter open water swim on part of the course to gain familiarity, and to loosen up a bit. This proved to be a great decision, because it setteled me down and physically felt amazing. Met some BT'ers after my swim, that was neat. Further, I rode my bike from my hotel to bike check in, which added another 4 mile warm up for that portion. Walking the expo and everything else, was all I needed for my run.. :) Did a ton of walking this weekend.
None to speak of the morning of the event. Got body marked, set up transition which was in the best position I've ever had, then got my gear together and headed over to the swim start with friends.
