![]() Swim
Comments: NOTE: The swim time included T1 time. I hit my watch timer at the start of the swim and when I reached the bike rack my time was - 44:45. This means my T1 time was over 3 minutes. We'll talk about that in a minute. I decided to wear my wetsuit as I was concerned that I wouldnt' be able to finish the swim without it. I started at the back of the wave and stayed at the back for the whole swim. I found the swim quite difficult when we were swimming against the river current. My sighting was much better than in my last race and I swam pretty straight this time, not having to correct as often, or perhaps I was correcting more frequently. Although I was trying to stay relaxed and concentrate on proper form I feel I worked quite hard and used a lot of energy. I also had some calf cramping in both legs which I worried at the time could be a problem later (I've had trouble with cramping in a couple running races), but once out of the water I had no more cramps. I did have some trouble actually getting out of the water though - my legs cramped when I stood up at the end of the swim, then we had to climb up a couple rock steps. It took me a couple tries to take that first step up. But I made it out of the water and to my bike. What would you do differently?: More swim training. At my present swim fitness level and considering how little I've been swimming lately I think I did my best on this day. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: T1 time is include in the swim time and I'm not exactly sure how long it was - a bit over 3 minutes. I was quite out of breath after the swim and had to take a few seconds to recover before I could get my wetsuit off.. it didn't come off so easily either and took longer than it should have. I pulled on my helmut, bike shoes and race number belt. Took a drink of gatorade here and headed out of transition. My rack was near the back so it was a long was to the bike mount line. What would you do differently?: Better swim fitness so I'm not so out of breath in T1. Get a better rack position so I don't have so far to go to get to the bike mount line. ![]() Bike
Comments: There were lots of hills on this bike so I got lots of practice using my gears. Tried to use big ring on all the flats and downhills but had to climb in low gears on some of the big hills. Tried to keep my cadence in the low 90's. I was one of the slowest riders in my race so spent most of it riding alone. I did get excited when I saw a couple slow riders ahead but it wasn't so great when I saw they were 11 year old sprint racers !! What would you do differently?: Just need more time on the bike. I am happy with my progress so far since I've only been riding for a few months. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: T2 is include in the run time. I got off my bike at dismount and walked to the rack (not good at running on pavement in my bike shoes yet). Got my shoes and helmut off. My legs were feeling wobbly so I sat down to put on my running shoes. Again I was a bit out of breath in transition. I grabbed my running watch but couldn't figure out how to start the timer. I was pressing all the wrong buttons and seriously couldn't remember how to start it (I've had this watch for years) I was a couple minutes into the run before I remembered which button to push and started the watch! ![]() Run
Comments: When I started the run I was breathing much harder than I should be. There was a water stop about 1/2 km into the run so I took a cup of water and walked for a couple minutes until my breathing and heartrate slowed down. After that I was ok, and ran the rest of the course. At about the 4 km mark I started noticing some Oly. racers passing me ... I thought that was strange because I knew I was one of the last out of the water and I didn't passed only a couple OT racers on the bike. Then I realised (remembered) that it was a two loop run. This was ok because I was feeling good by the time I reached the turnaround. The second loop felt easier than the first but that's probably because I was slower. I ended up with probably the slowest 10K run time I've ever had but it still felt good to cross that finish line. What would you do differently?: Better swim and bike fitness so I have energy left for the run. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Got some water. Rae met me at the finish line and we waited to cheer in Michel (Machiavelo here at BT). I hung around the finish line for another hour to cheer in some of the 1/2 Iron finishers then headed home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training. Event comments: Well organized. Well marked bike and run courses. I'd do this one again. Last updated: 2007-02-17 12:00 AM

The race is about an hour and a half from my house, so I got up at 5 am, got all my stuff loaded in the car, double and triple checked that I had everything, and headed out about 5:45. I stopped for coffee and a bagel at 6:45 and got to the race area a little after 7. Found the registration area and picked up my number then went back and got my bike and stuff set up in transition. There was a 1/2 Iron distance event starting at 8, my race was at 8:45. I watched the start of the 1/2, then got in a very slow moving porta-potty line. After a 20 minute wait I was heading back to transition when I spotted Rae (Raebo here at BT) and chatted with here for a while. My pre-race plan was to use my inhaler at 8:20, then get my wetsuit on and get into the water before my race start to do a swim warmup. The reality was that I didn't get back to transition to use the inhaler until 8:30 and by the time I got my swim stuff, headed back to the swim start, got the wetsuit on and got in the water 2 minutes before the start. So no warmup.
NOTE: This was my second triathlon. My first was a sprint 3 weeks ago. In that race I struggled in the 500 m swim. I tried to do some OWS to prepare for this race, but only used my wetsuit a couple times. I was quite nervous about the swim.
