Total Time = 1h 08m 30s
Overall Rank = 72/800
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 12/78
Pre-race routine:

Wake up way too early, 4AM, get myself, my wife and my dog awake and motivated to get going. Stop at 7-Eleven grab some bagels and a giant cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

Swam back and forth to the first buoy. Felt really good when I didn't have over a 100 people fighting around me.
Swim
  • 15m 29s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started out really well to the first buoy but then I started getting water splashed into my mouth when trying to breath and it was all over for me then. I had to switch to breast and back stroke while trying to get my breathing under control.
What would you do differently?:

I started in a straight line to the first buoy, where everyone else was and I got trampled. For St. A's I will start all the way on the outside. I don't care if I lose time but at least I will be able to not hyperventilate and swim freestyle the whole way. I feel like I have become a better swimmer, but I still panic!
Transition 1
  • 03m 46s
Comments:

I was pretty happy with my T1 performance, the wet suit is always a pain to get off.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try Pam cooking spray on my ankles so the suit slides off easier.
Bike
  • 22m 10s
  • 10 miles
  • 27.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt great on the bike, the wind was pretty bad but I was actually thankful I didn't have deep dish rims or it would have been hard to ride in a straight line. I used the Profile drink system for the first time and it made staying hydrated a lot easier.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace just a little bit harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Struggled getting my shoes on because the sole kept slipping and my calf cramped a little.
What would you do differently?:

Put socks on even if it costs me 10 seconds it will save me from getting blisters.
Run
  • 25m 50s
  • 4 miles
  • 06m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Started run with a stomach ache which has been happening to me all week so first half of my run was pretty miserable and I got passed by no less than 4 people in my age group. Once we hit the sand I felt much better and picked up the pace and came within 20 seconds of catching 2 of the guys who had previously passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Try not to get a stomach ache so I can run hard the whole run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk and sit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim and my sub par run. If I had a good day I would have been top 5 in my age group.

Event comments:

Great race, will come back next year with a slightly different strategy and of course more experience.
