Pre-race routine:

Went to a yoga class beforehand to get my legs nice and loose. Headed over to St Paul about an hour before the race.
They closed Summit, a big main street, to traffic for the race. Well, I somehow ended up finding a street without a barricade and got onto the course where people were warming up. Oops! So I'm driving slow trying to find another street without a barricade and people are giving me all sorts of crazy looks. Sorry guys, my bad! I come up on these two bovine-esque women and they glance back at me, and will not move out of the way. They keep waddling along. I'm SURE they are doing it to be obnoxious. I drive behind them at 2 miles an hour for as long as I can take and then I just get pissed that they are being so rude. So I rolled down my window and yelled: "Hey FATSO, move or else I'll run your fat ass over!" And laid on my horn. Ahahahha I know it was mean, but I got an immense amount of satisfaction out of it.
I was running out of streets to turn down, so I just turn down one by the college and was about to move some cones to drive around, and the police officer starts yelling at me not to touch them. Okkkkaaay, you can come walk over and move them yourself. So then he accuses me of going around a barricade to get ON the course and I politely tell him differently. Blah blah, he grunts "your word against mine" and I just say "I'm not trying to argue I'm just trying to get to the race so I can run!" For some reason this seems to melt his heart and he even shows me where a good parking spot is and tries to make small talk.
Ran into Bryan (mndiver) and his wife Kelly on my way in. Somehow missed the other BTers :(
Event warmup:

Ran for two miles around the neighborhood and on the course to get my legs warm. Did some drills, yada yada.

Comments:

I was concerned that with all these long slow miles I've been doing that I wouldn't be able to turn the pace up, or that I'd crash and burn too quickly. I started out conservatively but after the first mile I really focused on keeping my cadence up. I felt good! I was passing tons and tons of people.
My first mile was about 8:15, and I KNOW that I can run 5 miles at a faster pace than that. I didn't want to finish over 40 minutes, so I kept that in mind the entire race. There were a few really small inclines, and on those I focused on not losing any speed. I passed a lot of people on the inclines. Nice!
After three miles I thought "only two miles to go, so crank it up!" I focused on picking people off. The last mile was there in front of me before I knew it! I kicked it in (or at least, tried to) and finished very strong.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps start a little mroe aggressively. But I'm happy with my performance here. It felt great to really just RUN.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and watched some people finish. I was sweaty and it was COLD out! So I went back into the college field house. Grabbed a banana and water. I'm stretching out in the middle of the gym, and this guy comes up and asks how my race went. At first I thought he might be a BTer, but he definitely was not. So I chat with him for awhile, expecting him to leave, but he just stands there! So I ask some really lame questions just so that he's not standing there just staring. Finally I realized he wasn't going to leave so I say "Well, have a nice day..." and he asks me out to dinner! This guy was like, 45! And not hot in an older man hot type way like George Clooney either. I said "Umm thanks but I don't think so." He says "Well I would have kicked myself if I didn't try." And then I saw Bryan and his wife and excused myself quickly. Awkward!!! It's not like I was putting out signals or anything. You have to admire his boldness at least, haha.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think it was a good run for me. Perhaps if I had taken yesterday easier my legs would've had more juice.

Event comments:

I had a good time running this race! The course was really nice, and FLAT! I reccommend this race to anyone crazy enough to want to run after St. Patrick's Day.
Oh speaking of which, Sparks wimped out. He claims his knee hurt too much this morning... I'm pretty sure he just didn't want me to beat him :) Such a bummer b/c I was really looking forward to it, haha.
