Swim
Comments: Once I got in to the water I was much calmer than I had been over the past couple of days. The water had very low visibility and was full of seaweed. There were lots of markers and a good concentration of volunteers. For the first third of the race I found myself continually gliding into people on my left, but there were no real collisions or kicks. I learned quite quickly that using someone else as a guide is not a great idea. The girl I had spotted was criss crossing more than I was. By halfway I was doing better with navigation and was able to pull away from and even pass a few people. Overall I was happy and surprised by with my effort in the water. My lats are sore today which is a good sign that I really gave it my all. What would you do differently?: I should really learn to breath on both sides to help avoid gliding into people on my blind side. A little more practice navigating would also be helpful. Transition 1
Comments: Not too sure of my time on this one, T1 and bike times were together. I'm sure it was slow but didn't feel overly clumsy or wasteful. I didn't feel any queeziness coming out of the swim which was a relief. I had my suit down to my waist and my goggles and cap off before getting to the bike. Since I use cages, no problem with shoes or getting up to speed. What would you do differently?: Practice more. Bike
Comments: Used my aerobars for only a tiny bit of the race since I'm pretty green using them. I was surprised by how aggressive some of the riders were. One girl cut me off and went off course just to pass me on a sharp turn. What would you do differently?: Push it a little harder. Practice sharp turns. Transition 2
Comments: T2 & Run times together, so again, I'm not sure of the exact time. Probably pretty quick since I already had running shoes on. I little bit of a stutter racking my bike, but other than that I just put on my hat and ran. What would you do differently?: Practice racking. Run
Comments: It felt like I was going much slower than I was. I was really overpowered by the heat. I used most of my water to dump on my head and shoulders. Even though my head was saying go faster, my body was not going to cooperate. One poor fellow even passed out on the course. I was able to speed up a little for the last couple hundred meters. What would you do differently?: Practice running in the heat.... YUCK! Post race
Warm down: Walked around a little with my daughter. Got some drinks and snacks and headed home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Experience, heat, my engine. Event comments: Overall I'm extremely happy with my results.... Afterall, I did achieve my goal and I AM NOW A TRIATHLETE!!!! Last updated: 2007-02-22 12:00 AM

After a nerve racking couple of days, my first race day was here. My day started out with a coffee, a bowl of oatmeal to go, and a two hour drive including several pit stops. (nerves) Had no trouble finding the race, got a good parking spot nice and close to the transition area and began setting up. We were over an hour early so I was able to take my time. I looked around at everyone's set up to see if there was anything I was missing, or if there was anything that would work better in a different spot. Met up with fellow BT'er KRCSWO, who was nice enough to take a peak to see if there was anything I could do better. He asked if I could lose the sock, which I wasn't ready to do since I've never ran without them, and suggested moving my towel, which worked out great. Tried to keep calm, ate a cliff bar, drank some water, took a walk with my daughter and waited in line at the port-a-johns. About 20 mins to race time, I took my cue from everyone else and began sliding into my wetsuit.
Swam a little bit just to get used to the water.
