Swim
Comments: I started out well. There were alot of folks in our wave and I got away pretty cleanly. I drafted a bit and all was well. I then veered a bit right and caught clear water. Of course the reason for clear water was bad, as I was pretty much going into oncoming racers. I hit one poor girl head on and veered back on course. After the turnaround things were pretty good, but the damage was done. Consensus was that the course was a bit more than 800 yds. I navigated poorly, but most everyone's times seemed slow for such a perfect day to be in the lake. Getting in the water felt good after baking in the sun for 75 mins. What would you do differently?: Navigate better. Sight more, draft more. Transition 1
Comments: T1 went pretty darn well. I was located in a spot on the east end of transition. Running with bike was minimized. What would you do differently?: Get even closer to the east end of T. Bike
Comments: This is my home course and I took advantage of it. I ride this course in training a couple times a week and know where to push, and how to keep momentum to roll the hills. I set a new PR for a bike leg in a sprint. Yahoo! What would you do differently?: Drink more on the bike. Set up my aerobar drink system. Transition 2
Comments: Arg, I pulled a rookie mistake! I couldn't for the live of me find my transition spot. Found the general vicinity just fine, but without competitor bikes/stuff around struggled a bit. Burned what seemed to be an eternity, but was seconds for sure. What would you do differently?: Hava a 'plan b' landmake to find my spot in case landmarks change while on the bike. Run
Comments: I pretty much gave it all I had on the run. Passed a few in my AG. I met my IM training partner Dave about 100 yds from the turnaround. He and I both knew he'd catch me in the last 1.5 miles. I gave him a high 5 as he went by and felt good that he was the only AG'er to pass me. What would you do differently?: Not bike 101 miles the day before the race Post race
Warm down: Wandered around, got something to eat What limited your ability to perform faster: The fact that I did my first century bike (101 miles) yesterday pretty much set the tone for the day. I was just in this race to see how my legs would react after beating them up the day prior. I went into the event with NO expectations and did pretty well in the end. Event comments: Very well organized. Aid on the run was pretty sparse, but still OK. Food afterwards was great. Givaways were plentiful, but couldn't manage to get my name drawn. Ate some oatmeal and a banana for breakfast. Sipped some Heed prior to the race.
This was an event format I'd never encountered. Transition setup was at 6:15, transition lockout was at 7:45. First of 7 waves went out at 8 and I was in the last wave going out at 9am. Couldn't go back to transition to retrieve gel/water so baked in the sun for 1+ hrs. Live and learn.
I was a bit tired from yesterday's century ride so didn't warmup at all. Water had swimmers itch, and I didn't want to tax the legs running or biking.
