Pre-race routine:

Woke up at hotel about 20 minutes from the race site. While driving to site, I ate cereal bar, banana, granola bar. Drank some water and gatorade. Got to the race site shortly after transition opened and got a good spot. Checked in, body marked, and then mainly chatting with lots of friends.
Event warmup:

Short bike (2 mi.), short run (7 min.), didn't get a swim warmup, and barely made my swim start. I was talking to much, and seeing my family...
Swim
  • 08m 56s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was average. I was actually disappointed with my time, as I thought I had done better. Came out of the water and ran up the hill. Heart rate was racing pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

I'm going to really work my technique in the offseason. I think I will get a swim coach.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 39m
  • 14 miles
  • 21.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Not as good a time as I was hoping for, but it took me awhile to get my heart rate in control and for my legs to feel good. I started to feel real good about mile 9. Starting into the wind may be a tough way for me to go. I had quite a few mental battles with myself on the bike leg. My goal was to break 38 minutes, so I missed it by 1 minute.
What would you do differently?:

Different bike training. More speed work, and concentrate on sprint tris.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Good transition
Run
  • 19m 49s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok run. I was about 15 seconds slower than last year. I was hoping to break 19 on this run. I guess my training is not where it should be. Once again, I was fighting my mind a lot through this run. Need to change my attitude on that...
What would you do differently?:

More speedwork.
Post race
Warm down:

Just had fun mingling and chatting with other competitors and friends. I knew a lot of the people that had finished in the top 20, so it was fun to catch up with everyone.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just my training.

Event comments:

I have enjoyed this race the last 2 years. My family likes it, and the kids get to take part in the kids run after the event. We had a good time!
