Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30 and had some oatmeal and coffee. Left the house at 6:00 to meet Klynne at the parking lot. Had a really good nights sleep and the back was feeling good. My left knee is a bit sore from the biking fall-over on Fri. night. Got to the parking area and had about 1/2 mile walk to transition. We got there in plenty of time, set up my transition, got body marked. Had a nice long wait for the potty. Chatted with alot of people from the tri group and my mentor PTinVA.
Event warmup:

Really didn't do any warm-up. Had hubby take some good shots of K and I before the race.
Swim
  • 17m 5s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started out in the middle of the wave in hopes to get out in front of the pack. The first few hundred yards were OK but crowded and by the time we got to the first bouy everyone was on top of each other. What a mess that was!! Then we had to parallel the beach with the waves coming in. This was much harder on me then I thought it would be! The waves were much bigger than where we had OWS practice and I started to get sick. Along with that I was swallowing a bunch of salt water. By this time, I was tired and started to back stroke for a rest. I was bouncing off people and yelling sorry alot. I would try and turn back over, only to get sick again. Now I've gotten to the third bouy and decided to back stoke the rest of the way. I'm really disappointed in my swim. One, because I had practiced, and two I can swim better than that!!
What would you do differently?:

I quess I need to do more OWS practice with bigger waves. Plus not hurt my back the week before the race and not be able to workout.
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

HR was about 175 getting out of the water and did fairly well getting the wetsuit half way off before getting to transition. Did a very slow jog to the transition area. Had to sit and take it the rest of the way because I got a cramp in my calves.
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on getting the WS off while standing. Wear no socks when riding and running.
Bike
  • 37m 44s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.08 mile/hr
Comments:

This race was SO much better than the last two races because of my new road bike. Tried to really push hard. I was able to only pass a few people. I was a bit worried about drafting because a lady that was on a relay team stayed pretty close most of the race. We would play chase and pass all the way through. A friend of hers rode close to her, coaching her about the ride. I feel that this was probably one of my best rides so far this year. I really pushed hard on the small hills and noticed my speed at times being 19 and 20mph!!
What would you do differently?:

One thing I would do differently would be to pee before coming out of the water!! I had to go sooooo bad on the ride. I kept telling myself to just go, Ironmen do it all the time. I just could relax enough and it was making me laugh.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Walked the bike pretty quickly and was able to rack and change shoes pretty fast for me. Back started to feel a bit stiff coming into transition and had a hard time straighting up.
What would you do differently?:

Just practice getting faster.
Run
  • 30m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew going into this run that I wasn't going to push very hard because of my back. All I wanted was to finish this race without my back starting to hurt. I missed the beginning of the run course because there was no one directing people from the transition, and had to cut in between the spectators to get back. Was slow going along the beach and then I saw Kevin, Ashley, Randy and the boys yelling for me! Felt good to have people cheering you on. Once past the shops, there was a nice hill to get up the bluff, that I had to walk. Watched Connie(from our tri club)pass me on her way back from the run and she looked so good, it inspired me to push a bit harder. Then saw Sue pass me before the turn around. Got two waters at the turn around and threw one on me because I was so hot. I tried to catch up to Sue for the rest of the race but had to take a few walk breaks because the back was starting to tingle quite a bit.
What would you do differently?:

I really don't think that I could do much more for this run because of my back.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to get a Gatorade with Sue and had to lie down and stretch my back out. We had a very nice chat about how we did. Sue, thanks for being so great! Then walked over to the transition area to see Klynne and find my family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not to sure what limited my swim and am still very disappointed in myself. As for the rest of the race I knew going into this, that it wasn't going to be a race for me, as much as it was going to be training because of hurting my back last Sat.

Event comments:

I didn't think that there was enough water stops on the run. I know that most people don't drink that much in a small race but I would have like to see more. I missed the beginning of the run course because there was no one directing out of transition. My husband commented that he felt there was not enough safety people on the water. I will do this race again next year! Overall results are just the women.
