Swim
Comments: This was a decent swim for me, normally I do not sight very well, but have been practicing, and it seems to have paid off. Also, I usually stop at least once or twice during the swim because I feel out of breath or my anxiety increases because of people swimming over me/grabbing my legs, during this swim, I continued straight through. There was a group of 5-6 of us that swam the majority of the swim together, but there was a lot of bumping during the entire leg. with about 500 yards left to go, I got wacked in the face and my right goggle got compressed on my eye. Luckily enough there was no leakage, it was a bit uncomforable, but I continued on. I probably could have pushed the pace a little, but for my first olympic, I will take it What would you do differently?: Not much, maybe push a little harder, but I set a new PR for swim pace 1:43 (was 1:44 for 1/2 mile) Transition 1
Comments: Good smooth transition, the only way I could make this faster is to keep the shoes on the bike What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: Appearantly, my bike is still my strongest leg of the event. I started pushing early and was passing a lot of the short course participants. Probably the wierdest thing I saw on the bike was a guy from the short course was riding the bike leg (13 miles) in his wetsuit. Normally I would have said something, but between the rate of seed I was going, and the factg I was a little stunned, I was past him before I could think to tell him he might want to take it off to avoid overheating. The course was hillier than I expected, although not horrible. There was a couple of hills where I had to use my 39x25, which confirms that I really need to work on my hill work. With about 3 miles left to go on the bike the run course and bike course share the same road, so it was a little mentally draining to see the lead runners only 3 miles from the end of the race, then w/ about 1.5 miles left to go on the bike, you come up on the short course racers, which really put a damper in my spirit. It was at this time I looked at my watch and realized that I would not be able to hit my 2:22 target. Again, with this leg, I was not sure how hard to push, as this is my first Olympic, I think it went realtively well, but I know I left some speed on the table. I started with a bottle of Gatorade and a bottle of water on my bike, drank about 1/2 of each which seemed to do well. I took a gel about 5 miles into the ride and again about 20 miles into it. This strategy seemed to bode well, and my body never seemed like it needed extra nutrition. What would you do differently?: Push harder, and train on more hills. But other than that, not much since this was a new PR for me in avg mph in a race. Transition 2
Comments: Top 6 OA T2, 1st in AG. In fact, I even beat professional Triathlete Chris Legh by 3 seconds, gotta celebrate the little victories, right!? :) What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: It still suprises me how "slow" 7:30's really are when you compare it to the rest of the AG/field. This was another PR for pace for me, previos was last week @ 7:33, so I can tell my fitness is getting better. Overall I know I could have pushed this run a bit harder, but again, not being used to this distance, I did not know how hard to really push. Also, my rate of percieved exertion was about 9 out of 10, but my HR wouls have been about 7 out of 10. I think I nailed my nutrition by taking a gel about mile 3, and felt good the entire run, I am just not sure if it was outside factors (training through the race) that lead me to not being able to push the HR/pace? What would you do differently?: Push Harder Post race
Warm down: Walked around, talked to a few friends, and got some food What limited your ability to perform faster: Experience at this distance Event comments: Great race, will do again next year Last updated: 2007-03-03 12:00 AM

Got up, showered, ate 3 pieces of toast w/ peanut butter & a bannana right before the race
Got my transition set up, took the bike out for a 10 minute warm up, meet fellow BT'er Kelpeng and her husband, went for a quick run, and headed to the beach for the swim start and a quick warm up in the 68 degree water
