Pre-race routine:

No real routine. Just the usual chaos trying to get the fam out of the house. My husband and oldest son were also running and my younger son was coming along. Got to Hartford and found parking pretty quick and easy.
Event warmup:

I knew that for this short distance race I was going to need to do a good warm up to get my HR up a bit and get the blood flowing. Been focused on the long slow runs so running a 5k is a total about face! Trotted up and down for a good 20-25 minutes before the race. Ran into lots of familiar faces and eventually found Polly who'd I'd planned to meet up with before the race. I have to say that before I started moving it around a bit I wasnt sure I was really up for this race, but once I started trotting around I had that "post marathon rest and now I feel strong" feeling and started to get excited about running a good race.

Comments:

I felt really good all the way through. I ran mile 1 in about 7:23. Was shocked to see that on the clock. Once I caught that split my thought was to try and maintain — maybe pull back a little but try to maintain the edge. At about Mile 1.5 to 2 a young girl came up behind me—she was like right at my elbow—maybe 12 years old or so. She was breathing really hard and running really hard. I turned to her and told her to take it easy as we had a ways to go yet. She was breathing too hard to maintain for the remainder of the race—I was sure of this. Well, she says to me "I can't breath" and I am telling her to breath through her nose and slow down but she is sticking right by my elbow and she is starting to sound panicked. I knew that she was in trouble and maybe she sensed my mom-hood and latched on out of fear. So, I told pointed to a volunteer a few yards away and said that that was where we were going. I grabbed her elbow—gently, of course— and led her to the volunteer. There was a cop there as well which was a relief. I told them that she needed help. I guess she got a ride in an ambulance from what I heard afterwards. I was thinking to myself-here I am having the run of my life and losing seconds to get this poor little girl off the course. Anyway, I am glad that I was able to at least deliver her to folks who could help her and I hope they were able to locate her folks quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. No way I would not have helped out the kid, but I am sure it cost me a tiny bit of time.
Post race
Warm down:

No real warm down. Just caught my breath and high fived a bunch of peeps who finished around me or were spectating.

Event comments:

As always, Hartford Marathon puts on a good race. They had a great day and a great turnout! I bet the post race food was good too, but we couldnt take the time to wait in the long line. Got a nice glass and pretty nice tee too just for participating.
