Comments: Sighting was excellent - I am just too friggin' slow What would you do differently?: Hit the pool consistently the rest of the summer Transition 1
Comments: Last year's T1 was 2:13 Bike
Comments: Last year my bike split on this course was 1:06:47. This year I had 2 flat tires. First flat tire was my rear tire within the first 3 miles. I changed the tube, got back on the bike, then the second flat occurred 4 minutes later on the same tire. I started walking with the bike for about 1/2 mile. I kept thinking over and over about the guy at Kona one year who walked with his bike for many miles after an accident that crushed his bike frame. I also thought about Norman Stadler at Kona 2 years ago when he imploded/melted down after having his flats and quit like a baby. I told myself I was going to finish this race no matter what. While I was walking with the bike a support motorcylce stopped and asked if I was OK. He radioed to the support vehicle that I had a flat and he told me they were on their way. I kept walking until I found a good driveway to pull off on. Pulled out the flat tube and then waited for the vehicle. Based on my HR graph I estimate I lost 23:20 total fixing the first flat and then waiting for the support vehicle so that I could get a spare tube from them for the second flat. Thanks very much to the Erik's Bikes support vehicle! The found a small hole in my relatively new tire. They said a lot of people were flatting. I got back on the bike and hammered! What would you do differently?: Not have 2 flats Transition 2
Comments: Last year's T2 was 1:20 Run
Comments: I wanted to finish the bike leg very badly so that I could see what kind of 10k run I could pull off. I managed a top 10 overall run (7th) so that was very satisfying :) Good prep for my half marathon in 2 weeks. So, the day was not a complete loss. What would you do differently?: Nothing - good run considering the bike leg. Post race
Warm down: None. Just changed clothes, grabbes a banana and cookies and chatted with other racers. The barbecue line was waaaaaaaay too long to stand in and it looked like it was going to rain so we headed for the car just as the rainstorm hit. What limited your ability to perform faster: 2 flat tires. Event comments: I'm a firm believer in "you take what the day gives you" and you make no excuses. I was determined to finish the race and didn't feel sorry for myself. I was glad to have finished and pulled off a top 10 run split overall. So, the day wasn't a total loss and I'll be able to draw from today's performance/experience in future races. Last updated: 2007-03-08 12:00 AM

2 Flats on bike leg - 'nuff said.
Up at 4 AM, bowl of cereal and bottle of Ensure then drove to Tom's (Kona qualifier at IM WI 2006) house for the 1.5 hour drive to race.
Short spin on bike to get in the right gear and make sure my shoes were firmly clipped in. Briefly chatted with BT'ers Bryan and Ben
