Swim
Comments: Cool water. Waves 1-2ft. Largest sets would have been fun little waves. My swim went backwards. Usually I'm drowning for the first half, then I settle in. This time I started very smooth. Calm, fast, good navigation. Started a little to the side, but not too much. I definitely liked starting on a big ocean beach instead of a small lake beach - much more room. Navigated well to the buoy, then got lost on the way back. A light current had me drifting way off course on the way back, but I should have been able to compensate since I'm very comfortable with ocean currents. Overall, I really liked this swim, even with hte poor navigation at the end. My navigation practice paid off in the beginning. What would you do differently?: Keep my head about me and pay attention to current. Transition 1
Comments: I sandbagged it and took a quick shower on the way up. This was very lame, since I really didn't get all the salt off, just wasted time. What would you do differently?: Not shower. Bike
Comments: It must have been windier than it felt, since I really wasn't passed by as many as last time, and did some passing on my own. One guy passed me on a mtb but he looked extremetly fit. What would you do differently?: Get bike shoes. Transition 2
Comments: T2 went ok. Racked around the same time as a couple on the same rack, so it was a bit tight. No bike shoes makes for a fast T2. Very long run to transition exit, since I was near the beginning. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Took a while to get settled, but I felt pretty good. At about mi1.5, I started vurping Krispy Kreme chocolate glazed, NOT GOOD. That settled down at about mi2, so it wasn't terrible, but it's not something I want to repeat. I could kick my own a$$. My goal was to break 8min/mi. So, of course I did the math and figured out the time to beat for the course. Shooting for sub-27 the whole time. That's right, sub-27. Ran in in 24:20 and felt fantastic. Then I did the math again. I know I could have dug up another 20 sec somewhere over 3mi, like passing on the self-serve water. What would you do differently?: Learn basic arithmetic, which should be easy since I'm an engineer. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a lot. Turned in my scorecard and got a bagle. Quick dip in the ocean and shower off. Drove home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mathematics. Event comments: This was a bunch of fun. I wish I were doing the next two, but I'll have to wait 'til September. Also, I met charder while waiting for my swim to go off. Hope to catch him around town. Update - Many did not calc a bike split. No way I was actually 4th ag on the bike. To even it up, i figured everyone who beat me overall beat me on each leg. Probably not accurate, but ok. Last updated: 2007-03-08 12:00 AM

Woke up 10min late, so I didn't get my planned breakfast of a whole wheat bagle with peanut butter. 3 steps to setting an alarm: 1-Set the time, 2-TURN IT ON. Luckily I have a natural clock.
Stopped for Krispy Kreme and coffee on the way to Long Branch. Big mistake. More on that later.
Picked up my packet. Went to the loo. Changed. Set up my bike in transition. Got an inside end spot so that I'd have some room to change in T1 and T2. This was good. Sipped Gatorade, put on my wetsuit, and waited.
Just stretched a bit, got my shoulders loose, and swam a couple hundred. The water was cool but very nice.
