Swim
Comments: My swim went fantastic. I was lucky in that the two people in front of me did not show up so I had a 45 second gap between me and the person in front. I only caught one person during the swim this year and she graciously let me go by at a wall without incident. The pool was really warm but I was fine with that. What would you do differently?: Nothing, great swim Transition 1
Comments: T1 went fine. I decided not to put on any long sleeves like arm warmers or a wind jacket, as well as no gloves. I think this was still the best decision but I second guessed myself on the bike course. What would you do differently?: nothing, good T1 Bike
Comments: The bike went pretty well considering the winds which were very strong at times. There were times were I maintained 24-25 mph when I was with the winds for several miles but then there were times where I hit the wind head-on and dropped down to 17-18. All in all, my bike time from last year dropped over 3.5 minutes so it was a much better bike. I stayed down the whole time and really felt great thanks to all the IMAZ training. The only time I cursed myself out loud, which is what I do when I try to push myself, is during a point where there was open marshes on both sides of the road and the wind was pounding from the side. I actually had to lean slightly sideways to stay upright on the bike. Then the road goes over a little bridge and you are right against the wind. What would you do differently?: Warm up my hands coming into T2 Transition 2
Comments: T2 was rough. I came in with my feet and hands both completely numb because of the cool air and wind. I wish I would have breathed on my hands for the last mile to warm them back up. I couldn’t grip my laces to tighten my shoes, and then I couldn’t snap my race belt on. The transition was about a minute slower then it should have been. What would you do differently?: Warm up my hands before T2 Run
Comments: The run was good and bad. I had bad cramps for the first ½ mile and actually had to stop and stretch it out because it was so painful. Luckily someone behind me yelled to stretch into the cramp and after 30 seconds I felt 100% better. After the turn around I must have flown because the last half of the run I went less then 11 minutes. Not a great time but not a bad time so overall I am satisfied with the run. What would you do differently?: Drink more before the run. Post race
Warm down: My dad started his swim exactly 1 hour 10 minutes and 15 seconds after I started so my goal was to finish in time to see him start, which I succeeded in doing. After finishing the race and having my chip removed, I continued running into the pool building and was in time to see him on his second lap. Then I spent the rest of my day encouraging him on through the swim, T1 and T2 and then the final stretch of the run. I was at the finish line as he crossed and he fell into the arms of my mom and me. It was the best part of the entire day watching him finish something I am sure he never thought he would be able to do when I first started a few years back. He said the emotions he felt as he turned and ran the last 100 feet to the finish were like nothing he has ever felt!! I can’t wait until we do our next race together. He had a great time and had lots of encouragement thanks to his Gamecock jersey. He said tons of people yelled Go ‘Cocks to him as he rode and ran. Event comments: I love setup events races, they are always fantastic! Last updated: 2007-03-09 12:00 AM

This was my dad’s first triathlon, so we left from Greenville on Friday and headed down to Parris Island. We hit insane traffic and bad weather pretty much the whole way down but we finally made it, picked up our packets, and headed to the hotel. While in the hotel, I realized I had done the dumbest thing I could possibly do, I FORGOT MY HELMET!!! Now what am I going to do. Well, luckily, we figured out that my dad would not be starting his bike until after I was finished so I would use his helmet and then drop it off at his transition while going through T2. (I don’t even know if this is legal!!) Well that let me sleep that night and so we got up at 5, ate, and headed into Parris Island which was a long way from our hotel. We got there real early, I think the 5th car, so my dad and I were able to set up both of our bikes on the outsides of the racks. His rack was 3 in front and directly across from mine so it was perfect for our helmet plan. But then, my parents decided to just buy me a new helmet (I have no idea why, I guess they were just happy I got my dad into something like this). So they bought me a brand new helmet, which I feel terrible about but I must say it’s gorgeous.
After setting up my dad and I went inside and tried to stay warm in the pool area until race time. I went out at one point for a 10 minute jog and jumped in the pool for about 10 minutes before the pre-race meeting.
