Swim
Comments: Swam conservatively. Focused on form (rotation, pulling my arms fully through the water and not stopping at my waist) and tried to stay relaxed and focused. I did all open turns, minus the last one, and (hooray!) I didn't push off the wall post-flip-turn into the lane line. I was the third out of the water for my wave. What would you do differently?: I need to push harder next time, be a little bit more uncomfortable as far as breathing goes. I think I can get down into the 15's with just a bit more effort. Transition 1
Comments: (Transition times included in bike leg.) I got my bike shoes on fairly quickly. I had to wrestle with my helmet to get it on around my hair (which was in a bun under my swim cap). I didn't wear sunglasses or gloves, which I think was the right decision on both. I also didn't just "hop on" my bike; I stopped and clipped in with one foot before I started rolling. What would you do differently?: I didn't run from the pool to my bike because I didn't know you could. French braid my hair so I don't have to struggle to get my helmet on. Just get moving on the bike before worrying about clipping in. Bike
Comments: I planned to push hard on the bike leg because I didn't know how hard I would be able to push in the run due to my IT band problems-- and that's exactly what I did. Because I was in too early a wave, I didn't even see anyone else on the bike course until my third and final lap. This was unfortunate because it wasn't as fun and I didn't get to truly "race" with anyone the first two laps. The entire mile on Euclid was an uphill (with lots of potholes) but I pushed hard and kept my mph over 16 the whole way. What would you do differently?: Push even harder on the third lap; I started to tire so I slowed down a bit. I should have pushed a little bit more and I think it really would have helped my time. Also, my cornering skills suck; I need a lot more practice taking corners at a high speed. Transition 2
Comments: I had trouble getting off my bike: got my foot caught on the seat/tire and almost fell over. I also didn't run to my bike because, again, I didn't know you could. I could have racked a bit quicker also. I hopped right into my running shoes, and the quicktie laces were awesome. I stopped to eat a gel too. What would you do differently?: First off, completely unclip before stopping. Then, RUN with my bike through transition. Grab the gel and GO! Eat on the run. Run
Comments: I felt like I was running in quicksand until about mile 1.5. I felt the gel kick in then and I really felt like I was running. My IT band hurt a little bit, but not as badly as at the aquathlon. Drank water at mile 1.75, while walking (for a few seconds). What would you do differently?: PUSH HARDER!!! My run was pretty weak, and I can hardly believe the sub-24 minute time. I think they must have took off too much time for my second transition or something. Post race
Warm down: Nada. Ate a half-bagel and didn't drink enough water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Because I entered the wrong wave time (because I didn't know how fast I could swim, relatively), I was practically alone for the entire tri. I didn't have anyone to pace off of in the run, and no one to try to catch in the bike. Also, due to my aquaphobia (ha!) I didn't push hard enough in the swim. Event comments: NOTE: Overall ranking is out of 149 FEMALES. Total ranking is not currently available. http://tritucson.com/results/TUTres07.htm Last updated: 2007-03-12 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5:00am, an hour and a half before the race start. (I live about a mile from campus, two miles from the Hillenbrand pool.) I didn't eat anything --nervous stomach-- I just double checked my gear, loaded it into my backpack, climbed onto my bike (before sunup!) and biked to the pool in my skinsuit and my sweatshirt.
I arrived around 5:30am, found a free spot on a rack and set up my bike, my towel with bike shoes laid out, socks on top, and my running shoes beside them, loose and ready. I bought quickties the day before-- had success with them this race and will continue to do so.
Easy two mile bike from home to the pool (see above).
About 10-15 minutes before my wave start (at 6:30am; I was the first wave-- seriously overestimated my swim time), I ate a Gu gel and jumped in the pool to warm up. I swam about 250-300 yards as a warm up. At the aquathlon the Saturday before, I only swam about 150 yards, disjointed and I didn't feel warmed up or confident in being able to swim even 100 yards without stopping. On the contrary, I warmed up consistently, leaving me feeling only really, really nervous, but more confident.
