Pre-race routine:

Road tripped down to Moab with Brett (Alpine87) his cousin Drew and the ever-speedy LiliaMonster (devotchkatata)! Pretty fun drive... we played a new road trip game called Battle of the Ipods.

Arrived in Moab just in time to get to the Expo. Great booty-bag that included a technical shirt that not only fit properly, but is attractively designed(very rare) and a running hat. Went to Safeway and stocked up on supplies then checked into our condo (sweet) and enjoyed a fine pasta dinner prepared by Chef LiliaMonster. Went to bed a few beers short of a 6 pack and fell asleep watching South Park.

Event warmup:

Had a bagel and some coffee then headed out to the bus loading area... Drank a large Gatorade on the bus while we drove up to the staging area; about a half mile short of the starting line. We had about an hour and a half before the gun and it was pretty cold out too. About a half hour prior to the start, I took off my sweats and then walked up to the starting line.

Comments:

This was a personal best at the half marathon distance.

I went out fast (5:46) first mile and I was afraid of that... The course starts on a downhill and I didn't want to go out too ambitious. I overheard two guys talking and one of them said, "I'm just going to try to maintain 6:00 miles", and the other guy said, "Well, I'll just run with you for as long as I can...", I'm thinking, "How the hell can they talk at this pace... I can barely hang and its only mile one!" I decided to use these two as pace rabbits. The first guy ended up beating me by about a minute and I dropped the other guy at around mile 8 or so.

I knew my pace was fast at mile 10 when I realized I was less than a minute off my best 10 mile time in a race. However, the sun was out and the temps were rising and my sore thighs (from last weeks huge trail run) were starting to really hurt.

I also knew that this is the point in the race where I had to dig deep to not fall off pace. My splits were slowing here and it was simply a matter of not losing too much time over the next 3 miles.

I was glad that mile 11 was my slowest mile and I was actually strong enough to pick it up just a bit on mile 12 and 13. My finish was strong and I picked off a few runners. I did get past at the finish by one guy who snuck up on me. I hate it when that happens!
What would you do differently?:

One: I wish that I didn't run a difficult 16 mile trail run with 2600 feet of elevation gain so close to this race. I hurt my knee and my thighs are still tight from all of the downhills.
Two: I wish I didn't have a snowboard accident last Monday bruising my ribs.
Three: I probably should have carried a Gatorade bottle with me (like I normally do) because I didn't drink or eat anything during the race.

But with all that said: perhaps I did everything right! I had my best half-marathon and I attribute that to a strong early season start giving me late season fitness.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a bottle of water and circled back to the finish line to watch Lilia fly on in to her personal best!

Soon after Brett and Drew finished and we went off to some Mexican Restaurant for greasy food and Margs and beers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A few minor injuries poor hydration.

Event comments:

Awesome race, amazing setting, a great day.
