Pre-race routine:

Up at 7 (9:30 start) and half an Ensure, half a banana, cup of coffee, packet of oatmeal. Started sipping Gatorade about 45 minutes before race time. Took three shot blocks 15 minutes before start.

Met up with FirstNet911, MaggyRuth, and Morey1 before the race.
Event warmup:

Doood. I was about to run 13.1 miles. I'll call the first mile or three a warm up.

Comments:

Temp was good, wore two long sleeve t-s, my fave swim trunks for running, and a light hat to start. Took off the hat after about three miles, and unzipped the top shirt and rezipped as necessary. Pacing was great, most of the time was right around 6.6 mph according to firstnet911's gizmo. Good conversation pace, great bonding time.

The turnaround is a bit past half way, and felt fantastic at this point. Had taken a GU around mile 3.5, and took another one at the turn. My plan was to enjoy a mild caffiene rush with this one, and really enjoyed the flavor of the Espresso Love 2X caffiene Gu. However, about five minutes later, my vision was jacked up and I was feeling a bit overwired. Note to self: Experiment with 1X caffiene Gu's, and see if you should just stay off the stuff while racing. Just gatorade at the last stop around 9.5 miles.

Based on how great I felt for the majority of the race, I thought I would have some gas in the tank to kick it up the last few miles. Not the case!!! firstnet911 gave me some great encouragement and tried to drag me along on his final push, but my push was really just maintaining my 9:15 pace. Happy to come towards the finish and see MaggyRuth with the Donkey sign!

At mile ten, I was ready to be done.
What would you do differently?:

Not take a 2X caffiene gu at the 7 mile mark. I had jarred vision for the next 30 minutes. Very distracting when you are trying to run! I think the 1X caffiene is probably sufficient for me...

Warm down:

Kept walking until HR got back under 120. H20, trail mix, Pepsi, and a beer (thanks firstnet911!).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run fitness. My longest run since last July is 6 miles. Been logging longer bike rides, but no long runs. Aerobically was fine, but need to spend more time doing long runs to feel stronger towards the end of a long one like this.

Event comments:

This race is good value--$30 and you get a tech t-shirt. I didn't win the race, but I did win the who-had-the-higher-avg-HR contest/bet with firstnet911 and scored a sweet pullover for it.

So fun. Met up with everybody after the race, met jmwebs (he's humble but he collected hardware in the 5k!!!), but didn' find tripletsmom. Lots of women in yellow jackets Tammy! Left my cell phone in the car too, sorry we didn't meet up!

This race was a success for me. My longest run ever! With the exception of the caffiene overdose, nutrition was good. Big thanks to Craig (firstnet911). You are a great running buddy, I was glad to have the support! Your daughter is too funny, I predict she will be a professional photographer and I haven't even seen the pics yet!

Mile markers were focked up. I started out recording each one, but I know I didn't run an 8:08 first mile followed by 9:50 second, so I stopped bothering. Brace yerself for this. Average HR: 188. Max: 201. I didn't feel winded at any point in the race--my limiting factor was rubber legs and general fatigue the last three miles. I made a point to not look at HR during the race, as I wanted this to be based only on perceived effort.
Course: Flat, out and back, majority asphalt running trail with 2-3 miles of city sidewalks and streets to start and finish. Nice having city streets to start, as it allowed the relatively small pack to spread out nicely.
