Swim
Comments: This was a great swim for me. Starting in time group waves was fantastic. Was able to set my pace and breathing; both side every 3 or 5th stroke. Was relaxed the entire race and caught some of the waves in front of me. The waves were seperated by 3 mins each. Great feeling after the last swim I did (and that was less than half of this distance)! My bro did great too...worked on breaking my elbows early... What would you do differently?: Less leg work, saw a swimmer not using a kick and did that for 1/2 the race, good for preserving the legs! Transition 1
Comments: Short run from the beach to transition. I was satisified with my trans, took my time, rinsed my feet, put shoes and socks on. Had some water and gatorade and walked to mount point. Could have shaved a whole lot of time, but not really focusing on that for this tri. What would you do differently?: Helmet on, while stripping suit. Bike
Comments: We were a little stressed out after driving this course in the car day prior, however the race was suprisingly good. I was fired up after the first 2 miles, lost my chain on my front deraileur on the downhill!!!Arrggghh. Was planning to take it real easy because of my knees but after messing with my bike for three minutes, I got back on and pushed to make up the time...I was happy with my ride...did some standing in the saddle and did well on the hills. No complaints. What would you do differently?: Get the bike tuned up like I planned to do on Saturday! Knew I had issues with the front deraileur but ignored it and paid. ha. Transition 2
Comments: Did a sock change and little strtch before running. Grabbed a hammer gel and I was off. Wore my hat and sunglasses for this one. Everything went as planned. Worst thing was pulling my Polar 625 off my bike, that took like 1 min. Ha. What would you do differently?: Loosen 625 before dismount and put it on my wrist. Run
Comments: This run course hurt some folks! The effort to keep a good pace was tough. I usually expend about 550 kcal on a 6 mile flat course, on this course, used about 1000 kcal. Heart rate way up. You could not get into a rhythm. However, I enjoy running and constantly pushing myself and did the same on this course, never was passed, just passing people with the nice bikes! ha. Finished the last mile strong, full stride. What would you do differently?: Not do the hills! Pushed a little hard on the up hills to pass. Felt some twinges in my hamstrings, so I eased off. I need to relax more, like my brother keeps telling me...this is all training for the big race! Post race
Warm down: Crossed finish and walked for about 2 mins, grabbed some water and signed up for a massage. Stretched for about 10 min. focusing on my hams, calves and IT band. Got a great massage on the hams and calves...felt great! What limited your ability to perform faster: Even with my nagging injuries, I had a great race and was satisfied with a consistent performance. Should have tuned up my bike is all. Event comments: This is a great race, very challenging for a BT! The mile swim and hilly 10k is a great way to prep your mental toughness. Only issue is the 1 mile between the start and parking. Otherwise, recommend this race! Swim course is great! Last updated: 2007-03-22 12:00 AM

Up at 0445, took a shower, had a cup of coffee and a PB&J sandwich...Ron and I got in the truck and we were off to Montclair. Luckily, had a BM at the house and then at a Porto-crapper enroute to start point!
We had to park about 1 mile from the start point, so Ron and I rode our bikes (mostly down hill) to the start area. This forced a warm up for us, which was probably good for the 10 minutes of stretching that followed. My heart rate was up to 123 before we got in the water. I was a little anxious for the mile swim, and coming off my knee and hamstring injuries.
