Run
Comments: I'm a bit disappointed overall. I've never ran 15K before (my longest prior outside run was 7 1/2 miles). The heat really got to me and as I usually only do 5Ks and 10Ks I wasn't used to drinking water during the race which I really need to learn how to do. I stopped just before the 10K mark and started to walk a bit, then it was running/walking on and off again until I FINALLY made the decision to visit a port-a-john. After that I felt about 100% better and managed to run the rest of the way in. What would you do differently?: I would do many things different. 1.)I would slow my pace down to what I wanted to do ~ 8:30 2.)I would drink water during the race. I need to learn how to avoid getting it up my nose and putting it down while running 3.)I should have stopped and used the bathroom. I was worried about hurting my time, but eventually the pains probably led me to lose a heck of a lot more time than just stopping and using the thing. Post race
Warm down: A nice long walk back to the pre-arranged meeting spot then back to the car. Had 2 20oz waters immediately. What limited your ability to perform faster: Probably the refusing to go to the bathroom despite the need and the lack of water with the sun bearing down. The head wind on the way out cooled me down, but on the way back in the heat was pounding down. Event comments: Lots of things went wrong with this race (me being sick the previous week, stomach issues (Penn Station probably wasn't the best lunch choice yesterday) , and heck even my shoe came untied before I hit the first mile marker. I guess it is good I finished, and thinking back, when I did my first 5K ever I had to stop and walk for a bit, the same thing happened with my first ever 10K. So I was just following the pattern and had to stop and walk a bit for my first 15K. I think I learned some things that I can use for next year's race (drink more! If you have to go, go!). Time to switch focus to summer triathlons. I think I'll stick with sprint races. Also, I think I need to start running up that hill at the other end of the Kaufmann bike trail. Training in the flatlands of Dayton, OH isn't doing me any good when I head down to the rolling hills of Cincinnati. Last updated: 2007-03-25 12:00 AM

I was pretty pumped up for the race, so I had a difficult time sleeping. I went to bed around 12:30PM and at around 4AM I woke up thinking it was time to go. (the race didn't start until 10AM). I went back to sleep and woke up again at 5:30. Ate some Cheerios and a banana and watched The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly until it was time to meet my buddy.
We arrived downtown about 9AM. I was feeling better than I had in about 2 weeks (I've had a sore throat and as a result haven't trained as much as I would have like).
We did a slow jog around the block. About 30 min prior I hit the bathroom. Of course, as we were sitting there at the start line I realized I needed to use the restroom again. I made the unfortunate decision to wait till after the race.
