Total Time = 1h 41m 35s
Overall Rank = 109/136
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 50/54
Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 5:30am, drank a cup of coffee, bowl of oatmeal.. got to race about 1 hour early.
Event warmup:

Minor stretching and short jog.. 100m swim (wicked cold)
Swim
  • 14m 10s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

..started to freak out in the swim, very cold, lost my breath, lots of traffic, someone hitting my feet repeatedly, trying to attach myself to swimmer ahead and to the right for navigation.. finally, slowed down stroke, got my breath, and relaxed a bit.. rest of swim was ok.. better pace than last year by about 7 sec per 100m - so, not too bad..
What would you do differently?:

Try and get relaxed quicker, start out a little slower, and push harder after the final turn
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Tried to relax, get my heart rate down.. so, intentionally slow in transition.. my calc'ns show about 4min total before and after bike..
Bike
  • 49m 8s
  • 20 kms
  • 24.42 km/hr
Comments:

Relaxed - maybe too relaxed on the bike, though my pace was better than last year, over 2 min. quicker overall
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace slightly harder.. push slightly harder on the uphills.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 38m 18s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 40s  min/km
Comments:

Basically, I survived.. two days before, diagnosed with infected big toe which I had incized to drain, and then took antibiotics to reduce further swelling.. still sore, but not overly during run, but, really, no legs, running with a slight limp.. 4 min worse than last year. Probably came out too hard considering my condition.
What would you do differently?:

Paced myself better taking into account my condition - would have maybe done a 4min run/1 min walk.. instead of going out harder and doing 8min run.. getting my lactic acid off the charts immediately.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking, eating some fruit, gatorade, coke..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injured toe - run prep.,

Event comments:

Excellent race - spoke to others who uniformly commented positively, including one guy from Ontario who was very impressed with the food and organization of the race compared to Ontario events.
