Swim
Comments: This swim was a real learning experience for me. I knew the route was an out and back around the yellow bouy and back. Why I got mixed up on the way back, well, is beyond me. Two things happened, first, I was being a follower of the 2 swimmers infront of me and not swimming my own race. They confused me by cutting a wider swath toward the Sprinters bouy, and, having to swim head on into the sprinter waves, I lost sight of them, and thought we needed to swim the course of the sprinters to get into the flow of swimmers. Obviously this was wrong. Second thing that happend, is I went anaerobic, due to my error in navigation. I could not get my breathing under control enough to continue with my freestyle stroke, so, I went into survival mode and did everything I could just to get out of the water. Then on the exit up the ladders, I got behind a large behind, which almost sat on me. I was happy to have finished the swim leg, but, disappointed I ruined my positioning in the race. I would have been 3rd out of the water. What would you do differently?: Race my race and not be a follower. Know the course. Relax Transition 1
Comments: Need to organize my transitions, this will come with more races. This is only my 2nd race. What would you do differently?: get going faster Bike
Comments: This was a hilly course. And, gaining momentum down a hill to get up a hill was immpossible, as, there was either a turn to be made a the bottom of the hill, or, a round about to go through, or you had to break for a vehicle in the course lane. I saw too many women falling over on the uphill, because they could not unclip in time and lost forward momentum. Also, the run course was on the same route as the bike, and some Sprinters were turning into the bike course on the turn around. This did not help with keeping your speed up either. On the last lap, our group was told to turn right and get in the right lane to head back to transition. GREAT, 4 loops are done, we're heading back! Problem was, the police did not clear the lane for us to make the right turn and I rear ended a car, nice! Found out later, we should have stayed in the left lane and turn in front of the cars. Well, that didn't sound all that great either. What would you do differently?: Hill work. I need stronger legs to power up the hills. Canyon Lake will help with that. Transition 2
Comments: I made a mistake of heading out then turning around to get an extra drink of gatorade. Also, I had to stop and retie my shoes. I will invest in no tie laces, and do a better job leaving transistion. What would you do differently?: get better organized Run
Comments: I had a great run. The first half I tried to pace myself with another runner infront of me. I did have to slow my breathing down by walking up part way up the hill. At the turnaround, I got my second wind and felt strong to the finish line. Even had a negative split. What would you do differently?: Hill Work Post race
Warm down: Water and shade What limited your ability to perform faster: Course lay out and hills Event comments: This was not the most organized event I have participated in. Next year will be at the same venue, but, will be hosted by Irongirl. And the bike route will change. I doubt I will participate next year. Last updated: 2007-03-27 12:00 AM
