Swim
Comments: As ever my swim was disappointing. There was plenty of contact, the odd elbow to the head, but nothing serious. Certainly nothing to explain why I swim so slowly in triathlons. I feel fine while I'm out there - then I check my watch as I exit and my heart sinks. What would you do differently?: More open water swimming. Thought 23 minutes in the Greenwich 1-mile swim a couple of weeks ago boded well. Guess not. Transition 1
Comments: No major problems. What would you do differently?: I ran, rather than sprinted, because my HR was up from running out of the surf. Perhaps if I was happier with the swim I could push harder here. Still, 35th best T1 Bike
Comments: The road itself was pretty good with only a few patches of potholes or sand. That said, I did see a lot of people with punctures. As others have noted - a 5 loop course isn't ideal for 350 athletes. The amount of drafting, blocking, under-taking, poor positioning and all the rest was quite breath-taking. The race officials patrolling up and down on Harley's just added to the problem. Twice I was unable to pass someone because a motorbike was inches away and a number of times I wondered if drafting off an official was an offense. What would you do differently?: Not sure there's anything you can do with that kind of a race set-up. Maybe be more aggressive with my calls. It was easily my fastest time over that kind of distance, so mustn't grumble! Transition 2
Comments: No problems. Saw a few people doing the "side-saddle off in a sprint" dismount, but I'd never tried and wasn't going to try it in a race. I like having skin on my feet What would you do differently?: Nothing, think we've already covered the problem with my race and it was a lot earlier than the transitions. Run
Comments: Always my strongest event but particularly satisfying given the humidity and the 12 mile training run the day before. Given the conditions you might say that there wasn't a lot of water out on the course (every 1.5 miles) but it didn't bother me. I've been training a lot in the humidity of NYC and had my gummi-bears to keep my mouth moist. What would you do differently?: Nothing, very pleased. Post race
Warm down: Ice towel over the head, a few cold drinks, some stretching and then a dip in the Sound. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swimming, as a friend put it, "like a cinder-block". Some blocking, not least by the officials, during the bike. Event comments: I really enjoyed the race, the swag was fantastic, but a question mark remains in my mind about the bike course. Got there in good time. Which is just as well because the directions on the event website were about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Ended up waiting by the roadside until a car with a bike went by.
Swam a few hundred yards and then stood on the sand in my wetsuit. At 85F that warmed me up nicely!
