Pre-race routine:

ABQKid and I drove the 3 hours to Las Cruces on Saturday evening. We went out to dinner with the Pilgrims, and our buddy Randy who lives down there. Woke up about 5:45 had breakfast in the hotel and loaded the truck and went to setup transition. This was a backwards tri, run, bike then swim so transition setup always seems easier.
Event warmup:

Rode the bike down the street to make sure everything was working ok. Put on the running shoes and slowly jogged down the street to loosen up our legs. Went to start and waited for the gun.

Run time is the only time that I know since my buddy timed us, official splits haven't been posted yet. The rest of the times are best guess.
Swim
  • 08m 53s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was last and I entered the pool with one other guy. We jumped in and I beat him off the wall and swam 400 meters all by myself. At the 400 meter mark I caught ABQKid and 2 guys caught me. Those two passed me and I tried to draft them in but they pulled away pretty quick. Swam to the ladder and started to get out when they told me I had to touch the wall so I reached down and touched the wall, and they said now you're done.
What would you do differently?:

Could have pushed harder. I felt comfortable the whole time. My plan for the swim was to work on my new stroke and try and stay at a comfortable pace. I felt I accomplished both, so swim went well.
Transition 1
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

T1 was from run to bike. Took off running shoes, put on bike shoes, helmet and Sunglasses and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

For short races I need to learn how to start with my shoes on the bike. It's something I need to start practicing.
Bike
  • 42m 30s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 21.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs felt a little fatigued on this ride. I was still able to pass a lot of people so I was pleased with my effort. I coasted some of the downhills to rest my legs. The last mile I slowed down a touch and spun to the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Should have pushed a little harder and not coasted so much. Overall I was happy with my ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

T2 was from bike to swim. My spot was at the far end of transition, so I had to run through transition in my bike shoes. Racked the bike, took off my helmet, shoes and sunglasses, grabbed my goggles and headed for the pool.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to slip feet out of shoes while on the bike for shorter races.
Run
  • 20m 37s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was first so ABQKid, my buddy Randy and I moved up to the front of the start line. When the gun went off everyone took off sprinting, we were getting past left and right and we were at a 6 min mile. We knew we'd see most of them again shortly. 1st mile was at 6:41, 2nd mile at 6:49 and the last 1.1 miles at 7:07 so we picked it up a little at the end. Felt strong on the run and we were able to maintain the pace on the up-hills. Stayed with ABQKid and Randy until about the last 100 yards when they kicked it in a little.
What would you do differently?:

Felt I stayed at a pretty comfortable level knowing the bike and swim were still ahead. Wouldn't have done anything different as my goal was 21 minutes.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished the race, turned around and saw ABQKid finish. We stood around and watched and cheered for others finishing. We grabbed some gatorade and orange slices and talked to other members of our tri group. Waited to see our buddy Steve get the trophy for 1st place overall. I took 3rd in my age group and received my first ever hardware.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This race was put in our schedule by our coach as part of our Ironman training. He basically wanted us to make sure our bikes were working good in race setup mode and to get a good hard workout. With an actual taper, I know I could have gone a little faster...on the bike anyway.

Event comments:

The race seemed to be well staffed and pretty organized. The race isn't chipped, so splits aren't available for several days or weeks I've been told. My only complaint would be that the bike course was so bumpy...oh well maybe next year it'll all be like the really smooth section.
