Swim
Comments: Swim time was exactly what I expected. Had to run down some steps and outside before the timing mat so the actual time was closer to 5:30 which would of been my fastest 300 ever. Had a hard time finding a rhythm. Breathing was eratic but the swim was short enough to not really make a huge difference. Got passed by three people. Swim time I submitted was right on so not sure what happeened. What would you do differently?: Would of warmed up longer for the swim. Lack of experience on the pool swim format was a problem. Just never felt comfortable. Too worried about other swimmers. This will get better with experience. Transition 1
Comments: Long transition run from the swim site. Passed two of the three in transition that passed me in the swim. Focused, efficient and not hurried. What would you do differently?: Need to learn the rubber band trick. Need to practice the bike without socks to speed up this process. Other than that nothing different. Bike
Comments: Pushed too hard on the bike. Pretty much shut the brain off and went all out. Based on cadence, heart rate and pace I was ok for the 10 miles. Drank half a bottle of Gatorade durning the bike. What would you do differently?: Would of drank the full bottle of Gatorade. Think a little more and not push so hard. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was pretty good as well. Tried spinning the last quarter mile of the bike to get some blood flow to the legs. Both calves cramped as I put on the running shoes. Not a problem in transition but sucked in the run!! What would you do differently?: Take feet out of shoes on the bike. Other than that not much. Run
Comments: Disappointed in this run. Pushed pretty hard on the bike so my calves were very crampy for the first mile. First mile was probably around 10 minutes. Last two miles were seven and half. Need to be better than this on the run considering this is my strongest of the three disciplines. Felt much better at the end of the race than I did at the beginning of the run so there is something to build on!! What would you do differently?: Need to turn on the brain and push myself through the first mile. Not quite as hard on the bike would help. Post race
Warm down: Grab some water and walked back to transition. Packed up a few things and them went to watch 1 Foot and NCTRINEWBIE finish. Felt really good at the finish. Couldn't help but think I felt too good. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of race experience really hurt today. Need more bricks to prepare for the T2 transition but I am happy with my training other than that. Event comments: Since there was a last minute change on the run and bike courses I had no solid time goal in mind. Never raced on a flat course so had two generic goals of finishing in the top half overall and top half of my age group. Accomplished goal one with a 177 place finish of 345. Second goal was missed. Placed 24 of 37 in my age group. I need the two minutes on the run. This was a good race for my second tri. Got things to work on for White Lake. Last updated: 2007-04-02 12:00 AM

My pre-race routine stretched into Friday. Family and I left for the race on Friday afternoon with the intention of making the race meeting at 6:00 pm. Two hours later we were 30 minutes from home. Wife was sick so we hit every rest area and bathroom. Making the meeting was out of the question. Ended up turning around, taking the wife home and dropping my kids off at my parents. Made it too Wilmington around 10:00 pm. Checked into the hotel, drove the bike course twice, got some dinner and went to bed.
Had to pick up race packet so was at the race site around 6:45. Got timing chip and body marking before the lines got too long. Met up with 1 Foot and NCTRINEWBIE, hung out and talked for a little bit. Went to watch the "good" swimmers at 8:00. Double checked transition and went to warm up at 9:15.
