Swim
Comments: Of all the segments of this race, I have to say that I was the most pleased with my swim performance. Everything went perfectly. I was breathing great swimming with good form and I was a lot faster than I have been in the past. I was even able to draft a few people a couple of times. My navigation was better than ever, this was mostly because of Kev's pointers on the landmarks I should be looking for. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good T1, I was planning on taking my time. I never practiced putting the arm warmers on my wet arms so after I tried once or twice, I gave up and put on the long sleeve jersey. What would you do differently?: forget the arm warmers. Bike
Comments: Great bike ride. I finished in less time than I thought I wold and I was making very good decisions throughout the ride. I was very fast on the downhills and ok on the climbs. The only real struggle I had was trying to stay within myself and not expend too much energy before the half marathon. Overall, it was a great ride on a great course. What would you do differently?: Nothing except ride some more steep hills in training. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty good T2. I tok my time and rested a little. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Great first loop. I went out too fast though (8:33 first mile). I also waited and extra ten mnutes before my first scheduled walk break. I had planned on running 37:00 and walking 3:00 and repeating that process throughout. I walked after the first 47:00 instead and in retrospect, I think this was a mistake. I ran out of gas at about mile 9 and had to walk up some of the very difficult hills. Overall, I think that if I had trained a bit more running on hills, I would have fared a bit better. But I really can't complain with a 6:10 overall time, especially when I was hoping to finish somewhere between 6:15 and 6:30. What would you do differently?: Stick to my plan and train more on hills. Post race
Warm down: Walked and ate. Event comments: My first HIM!!!! This is an amazing event and a great experience. I am very proud of how far I have come. It was amazing to see all of the people on the course and thinking about how I am now one of them. What made the whole day worth it was getting to celebrate with Madison and Cindy just before the shoot. Having my daughter there made this one of the most memorable moments of my life and so very rewarding. We got a picture taken of me running with Cindy and Madison at mile 13. I must have looked like crap, but I don't care, that photo will be one of my prized possessions. So many times, I have see the IM and HIM finishers on tape celebrating with their small children and today I got the chance to do it. I almost started crying every time I thought of her and thought of being able to share this moment with her. My lifelong goal is to be her hero and today, I felt like I was. I am a Half-IronMan!! We got to the transition area at about 6:10 with a lot of time to spare to set up and get marked. It was cold in the morning. I was so anxious and couldn't wait to get started.
