Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 4:30 am, got ready and drank a red bull. Mark (Dmarkswan) and I loaded up the bikes and headed to the beach. We arrived at about 5:30 am and went straight to transition. Luckily, Setup Events provided bags to take to the swim start to put stuff in, i.e. shorts, shirt, and shoes. We then lined up at the bus stop and wait to be shuttled to the swim start.
Event warmup:

I have no overall warmup, but I did get in the water before the swim.
Swim
  • 28m 50s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

With the water being 80F and the outside temp being 62F, it was warmer in the water. I took a hammergel before the start. I spoke with my swim coach, Perry Maxwell, about the currents. I started in the second wave. As a warmup, I swam about 50 yards out and then back to check the currents. I started at the back of the wave, since swimming is my worst even, it was a good thing too. Everyone left me as soon as the wave started. The first or second breathe I took filled my mouth with salt water and I began to cough.

Once I started coughing, I could never get into a good rythme. I felt ackward the entire swim, and two or three waves ended up passing me. I was surprised to see that I did it under 30 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Swim as fast and as hard as I could across the main channel. Once you are pass that, there was a strong current to pull you along. I was swimming 1800 yards in the pool in preparation, but still seemed ill-prepared. It should also be noted that there was a 350 yard run from the swim exit to the timing mat, so that should be reflected in future when comparing times.
Transition 1
  • 05m 31s
Comments:

The first transition will always take me awhile since I have to wear an ankle brace.
What would you do differently?:

Not run past my bike rack.
Bike
  • 40m 49s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I was doing really well on the bike. I have been using a stationary trainer. At the beginning I was staying between 20-21 mph. On the return, I shift from my large front gear to the smaller gear and something snapped at the derailer. I was pissed at this point, and only had about have the speed the bike is capable of. I made it through, but I think that my time would have been much better without the equipment failure.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, the bike had me checked that week by Two Wheeler Dealer.
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

I missed my rack again! But this was a smooth transition.
Run
  • 28m 29s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I was wiped out by the time I started running. I think I did the best that I could do with the run.
Post race
Warm down:

After crossing the finish line, I went immediately to my family to cheer on Mark.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I seemed to be out of breathe the entire race. I just need to continue to work on endurance.

Event comments:

This was my second triathlon. I thought this was a great race. I will be waiting at the computer Jan. 1 to register for it again. I would tell anyone interested to do the same. This is a quickly sold out race for a reason. There were tons volunteers and the event was very organized.
