Pre-race routine:

This was my first mountain bike triathlon and first triathlon since being diagnosed with Type II diabetes last summer. I have always had severe issues with muscle cramps and so really attempted to work on that issue for this triathlon.

Woke up at 6 am, ate a bagel, some eggs and a grande drip, dark roast, no room about 1 1/2 - 2 hours before the start of the race. Only live a couple of miles from the race sight, so not worried about arriving to early/late. Registration process went smooth. Set-up transition area and put on wet suit about 15 minutes prior to the swim.
Event warmup:

Only a couple of minutes in the water to get to used to the temp.
Swim
  • 18m 22s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a mass start from the beach. I worked at controlling my breathing and relaxing and was finally in a groove about 1/2 way through the swim. I'm a slow swimmer, so I was happy with my time as it was 2 minutes faster than my pool swims leading up to the race.
What would you do differently?:

Seek out a swim coach.
Transition 1
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

Not a super fast time but went ok. Was able to get the suit off quickly by stepping on and pulling out my legs (read that tip on this board).
Bike
  • 1h 38m 36s
  • 15 miles
  • 9.13 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to do the bike in 1:45, my fastest time in training, so felt great about taking 6+ minutes off of that. Worked at pacing myself and taking in enough nutrition, but not too many carbs due to the diabetes. I actually felt better for the 2nd loop, even though my time was a minute longer. I think I had gotten into a good rythmn by that point and my heart rate had settled down.
What would you do differently?:

More hill work.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

I borrowed a bike for this event and it didn't have clip-in pedals, so I used the some shoes for the bike and run. I only had to take off camelback, helmet, gloves and put on a run hat and add a couple of gels.
Run
  • 38m 12s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

There is a 400 ft. trail climb within the first two minutes of the run. This had my hamstrings cramping. Ouch. I panicked a little because of the huge issue I had with cramps at my last triathlon. I did that triathlon as an undiagnosed diabetic and took in way too much potassium and carbs before and during the race, which some have said could have contributed to the cramps. I was a little nervous, but when my heart rate had dropped a bit, I worked on relaxing my muscles and controlling my breathing and amazingly the cramps stopped. As soon as I would tense up, the cramps were back. I felt empowered to finish the race with this new discovery. Was able to pass a few people in the last 1/2 mile and was suprised that I had anything left in the tank.
What would you do differently?:

Do a few more brick workouts before my next race.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my sister who was my support crew for the day. Ate some chips and took in some liquid before heading to In-N-Out for a doulbe double animal style.

Event comments:

There was lots of support and the course was marked well, quite a feet for all of the different trail options at park. Heard at the end of the race that a couple of kids had moved/changed one of the directional signs, so this sent a few bikers down the wrong path.

I felt this was huge success for me. The only triathlon that I have finished strong (or any race for that matter) and felt like I could go further. I also feel a little less panicked about the muscle cramps after this race.

Course: This was an open water swim in a resevoir/lake. 95% of athletes had wetsuits. One person who didn't was taken to the hospital for treatment for hypothermia. It didn't seem that cold, but I'm glad I was wearing a wetsuit.

Course: This was a mountain bike course through Bonelli Park; mostly fire roads, some single track and some pavement. There was one technical climb that had most people off the bike walking (including myself for part of it). It rained a couple of inches two days ago and this actually improved 95% of the course. I live close by, so had been riding it quite often and there were parts of it that had become so soft it was difficult to get traction. Well, the rain took care of that without adding too much mud.

Course: This was a challenging trail run, definately the hardest 3 miles I've done. Thankfully I'd run the course and knew what to expect. My final run time was two minutes slower than my fastest training run on the course, but I guess this is to be expected after doing the swim and the bike
