Run
Comments: So much for my strategy of keeping my HR in the 150's... Instead of doing consistent 10-11 min miles, my first mile was 8:38. My HR went to ~170 quickly and pretty much stayed there. I intentionally tried to slow myself down. I felt great but knew that running with that high of a HR meant that I would have trouble keeping pace later on. Even with my HR mismanagement, I was able to do a 10:51 pace which was within my expectations for the day. But I did that at the expense of HR avg. I didn't carry any liquid on the runs. Took a small cup of water at mile 2. What would you do differently?: Train more for the run! I started training in the beginning of April and ran ~3 days per week. I should have started running back in Feb. Transition 1
Comments: I put my shoes on before I mount the bike. I don't have tri bike shoes nor am I so competitive that I am concerned about saving seconds in transition by leaving shoes on the pedals and putting them on my while riding. My run has to get much better before I worry about this shoe stuff. :) What would you do differently?: Not much. It went pretty well. I took a couple of swings of Accelerade while changing shoes. I wiped my face and head before putting on my helmet and I took over my long sleeve T-shirt as I was walking in the transition area to my bike. Bike
Comments: The bike segment was a blur and a total blast. I love my new tri bike! I drank a 16oz bottle of water during the ride and also had once Gu gel when I was in traffic and unable to pass. What would you do differently?: train more and get my average speed up over 20 from 17.9. Transition 2
Comments: I don't take my feet out and run in my socks. I stopped to get off the bike right at the double line entering transition. A T<2min is good enough for me. Run
Comments: Was able to maintain my HR better though it was still way to high. Took a small cup of water at mile 1 and 2. didn't carry waer otherwise. What would you do differently?: just need to train more. the course was fine. Post race
Warm down: Walked around. Got hugs and kisses my my wife and kids! Ate a slice of pizza, watermelon and half a banana. drank some gaterade and hung around for a good 30-40 minutes. stretch a bit, etc. What limited your ability to perform faster: run conditioning and general total newbie-ness of running. Last year I biked over 2,000 miles and ran less than 50... Event comments: Great weather. Really nice venue and course layout. Well organized. Nice group of people (athletes and volunteers)! Packed bike and transition bag the night before. Race started at 9am. Willow Metropark is about 50 min from home... Breakfast was one cup of Honey Cheerios at 6:45am while I mixed two bottles of Accelerade and filled a water bottle for the bike segment. Ate 1/2 of a Choc. Chip CliffBar in the car on the way to the race and drank about 6 ounces of Accelerade. Once there, I signed in for my number and pumped up my tires and then racked my bike, got body numbering, etc.
Stretched, walked around and light jogging (~5-8 min). Finished the second half of the 12oz Accelerade bottle (2nd bottle was for transition area - quick swigs during T1 & T2). Tried to stay warm as it was pretty cool in the morning (mid 50's). I did the first run with a long sleeve T-shirt on top of my cycling shirt. Looked around for other BT'ers... was found by Leah just before the start.
