Age Group Rank = 2/18
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30, poured coffee to go, packed the car and was on the road by 5:10. Stopped for a bagel at Dunkin Donuts and arrived at race site by 6:00. Messed with Danielle's cut tire and eventually got set up.
Event warmup:

Struggled to get my new wetsuit on and worked up a good sweat. Took a couple strokes in the Sound before race start.
Swim
  • 28m 31s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

The new suit was comfortable. The water was chilly, so I was glad I was not wearing my old short-john. On the second loop, I found myself drifting away from the line between the buoys. Sighting was hard because of the fog, so I'm not sure I could have done better. Maybe following other swimmers would have helped.
What would you do differently?:

I was swimming into other swimmers often. It seems like if I saw someone beside me, I'd drift into them a lot and end up using too much energy fighting them. I shouldn't do that.
Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

I practiced taking off my new suit last night and had a hell of a time. I think the practice payed off as I think I have a method that is not too slow. Hopefully the suit will loosen up over time. The T1 times of others that finished around me were half the length of mine. I need to practice my transitions. I think I wrote the same thing on most of my race reports last year. I also forgot my GU.
What would you do differently?:

I would be faster and remember my GU.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 38s
  • 26.8 miles
  • 20.71 mile/hr
Comments:

I set my Garmin's HR alarm to beep at me when I was out of Zone 2. I was surpised that it complained that I was too low more often than too high. The course was pretty tough, the roads were wet and I think I handled it as best I could.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 58m 55s
Comments:

Nothing interesting here. The difference between my time and all the others in my age group was a second or two.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 42m 35s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

I set the Garmin's HR alert from Z2 to mid Z3 and set my pace accordingly. When I had a mile and half left, I let myself go and ran hard to the finish. I considered this race practice for running a conservative pace.
Post race
Event comments:

Apart from the crazy bike course, the race was really nice. For second place in my AG, I won a half price entry to next year's race, so I'll probably race it again. I'm not sure if I would otherwise because of the bike course.

Age Group: 7/18
Overall: 44/171
Performance: Good
Suit: Blueseventy Reaction
Course: Due to fog, the course became two loops with a short beach run in the middle. The course was probably long because of the last minute course change as the overall times were slower than one would expect for an Olymic race.

Course: Crazy course. It was three loops through Milford side roads. There were 3 180 degree turn arounds and many other sharp turns. It prevents you from getting into a good rythm as you have to hit the brakes often and then accelerate only to hit the brakes again after getting up to speed.
