Overall Rank = /4300
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 120/199
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition the night before because my wave went into the water last at 8:35 a.m. and transition closed at 5:45 a.m. Slept until 6 a.m. Had a banana and power bar on the way to the swim finish. Watched some of the swim finish. Walked to swim start. Watched several waves start. Had an Espresso Gel and water
Event warmup:

Other than the walk to the swim start there was no real opportunity to warm up. Stretched.
Swim
  • 22m 27s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Incredibly fast current. My time was four mintues slower than my half mile time and it is twice the distance. Lots of distance between waves.
What would you do differently?:

Navigate better. Swim better. I need to work on swimming.
Transition 1
  • 06m 10s
Comments:

There must have been 600-800 yards from swim exit to my transition area. My bike was right inside the gate where you came in from the swim. Good transition but I did not rush. Long run (75-100 yards) from my rack to the bike exit. Long transiton time was due to distances in the transition and to my lack of rushing.
What would you do differently?:

Move a little bit faster.
Bike
  • 1h 27m 59s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.95 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike for me. I felt good on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Try to move faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Solid second transition. From bike entrance to my rack was 75-100 yards. Ran with my bike. Relatively fast transition given the distances.
What would you do differently?:

Take a little less time for a drink and gel.
Run
  • 56m 51s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Ham strings felt tight in the first 1/2 mile and then loosened up. Run felt pretty good until the last mile. In the last mile, my quads cramped a little bit and in the last 75 yards I got a small stitch in my side that did not allow me to finish as strong as I would like.
What would you do differently?:

Take endurolytes or more gel/electrolyte supplement to prevent the soreness in my quads and the stitch near the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk. Accelerade, water and a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim and the slight tightness I had on the run. I need to do more 10k's in training.

Event comments:

Great first Olympic Distance Race. Very well organized and run. Excellent weather. Great people. Met my goal of finishing in under 3 hours.

Wow was the current fast. Even with the fast current, my swim still needs work. Mixed free and breast. Got way right at one point and a kayaker had to tell me to go left.
