Swim
Comments: Since the Clydes were mixed in with the 35-39 age group, I was surprised I heard more nervous old man jokes than fat guy jokes. This was my first "real" tri, previous was a reverse which ended in a pool, and first real open water swim. It took me a long time to get my grove. I couldn't breath right. I couldn't stroke right. I couldn't sight right. It felt like my arms were going to fall off right from the start. After rounding the first buoy and making it to the second one, I got a little rythym and found a good draft. I still hurt real bad but i felt my pace was pretty good, although slow. I wish I could say that the rest was a breeze but it felt like a struggle the whole way around. Rounded the last buoy and tried a couple times to stand. I must've stepped on a shell or a rock at some point deep n the mud (more on that later). I am sure I didn't catch anything from the back bay water....right! Checked my watch and was very surprised that my time seemed very respectable. The run up to transition seemed forever and I was a part frozen, part exhausted. What would you do differently?: Work on open water swim! So much different. Transition 1
Comments: Way too slow in transition! Need to work on that. Felt really light headed but that went away. Had to dry off my feet and throw socks on. Too much time dawdling....the guy that got 3 rd in my division beat me by 1:15 and he was over 1 minute faster in T1..there you go. What would you do differently?: practice Bike
Comments: felt real good on the bike right off the bat. Threw back a GU right away and it unfroze my brain. Tried to keep my pace at least 23 mph in the flats and I felt I did a soid job at that. The course was tight but everyone was very courteouos. Unfortunately, it was hard to avoid drafting in some parts, but it was very clean for the most part. Just put aero bars on and finally felt somewhat normal in them. Made it to the dismount and decided to experiment with riding with my feet on my shoes...worked out pretty good but I might need to practice that. What would you do differently?: Need to work on my overall speed. Was very happy with the result but I know it could be better. Transition 2
Comments: Better in T2. Feet were super numb still, probably didn't help that my toe was bleeding pretty good from my souvenir from the swim. What would you do differently?: not much..prctice for better speed. Run
Comments: AS I left T2 I was suffereing...feet were numb, legs were tired, toe was bleeding..wahhhhhhh. Got across the bridge and the first person I passed had a 73 on their left calf...time for me to stop whining and hope I can still be out there at 73! I felt like I was going real slow. I checked my watch at what I knew was roughly the 1 mile mark and it ws at around 8 minutes so that was encouraging (for me). Got to the hill and crawled on all fours to the top, or I should have, wouldve been faster. My thighs were getting very sore as I made my way down the hill and I felt pretty flat. I got passed with about 1 mile left and decided that this would be a good time to have someone faster than me to pace off. It worked and right before the bridge passed them. Once on the other side of the bridge I say some bigger guys in front of me and decided that I would kick it up and see if I had anything left. Passed one person, who after seeing my big butt go by him, decided he would dust me, and one other who I held off for the finishing corner and the finish line. What would you do differently?: more training and speed work. I really cant complain. Two months ago I could barely run 11 minute miles and I feel like I am getting better with every run. Post race
Warm down: grabbed a water and went to transition to pack up. Felt great. I felt a I had a really good race and definitely something to build off. What limited your ability to perform faster: experience and practice. Event comments: I am glad they brought this race back. I heard some positive and negative things about it and I am glad I did it. The people were all super friendly. They have some logistical issues to sort out with the Newport Dunes folks but all in all it was great. I think I was a little to geeked up afterwards and signed up for the 70.3 race in O-side afterwards.....next time Ill wait to sober up! Last updated: 2007-04-25 12:00 AM

Got up around 4:30 and walked the dog. She was pissed to be up that early as well. Tried not to wake the wife and kid. I got to the Dunes at around 5:30, thank god, because about 10 minutes later the line was out to Jamboree. Powered through my coffee and scoped out the transition and....the toilets. They really had a maze set up to get in and out of transition. Again, I was one of the first in line to get marked and set up before the line formed. Wandered around and just enjoyed the scene. Nervous excitement is a great stimulant.
Ran up and down the bridge a few times. Watch the tide slowly go out and I knew we were in for a mud bog. It rained on Friday so I was a little sketched out by what I was watching going down the river from my office building in Irvine. Oh well, 25 years of surfing in So Cal should make me immune from bacteria.....right? Went to the port-o-john and threw some body glide on and found out I was going to miss the closing of transition. Ran in, threw my wetsuit on and went found out my station was essentially gone now that everyone had set up around me. Went to the water and waited for our wave to go off.
