Run
Comments: Felt good for first mile. My HR was abnormally high from the instant I put on the HR monitor today -- I credit my respratory ailment and lack of sleep. Second mile uphill was tough, and I developed a painful side stich right about mile 2. I took a one minute walk break and the side pain subsided, then I just pushed to the finish. Missed my sub-30 goal by 35 second. A little disappointing, but considering I had a sleepless night and haven't breathed well in three days, I will take it. What would you do differently?: No Claratin the day before, learn how to avoid side cramping, start pushing hard a little earlier. I was suprised how much was left in the tank when I actually saw the finish and went for it. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, had some water, headed for the car. Completely drained the rest of the day. Felt like the tank was below empty. I think the combo of sickness, lack of sleep, and exertion just k.o.'d me. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of sleep, cold/allergies, and side cramp. Event comments: This is Anchorage's most popular run of the year. For me, it has always been an ill-fated race. Four years ago I ended up in the hospital with appendicitis the day before the race. The next year, my wife went into early term labor and we were right back to the same hospital. Last year we were down in Oregon, having taken what turned out to be a miserable job and moved our family down there. This year we are back home in Alaska and I am proud to finally have completed this run. Next year I will be back to see about a faster time. Last updated: 2007-04-26 12:00 AM

Sleepless night. I've been fighting a cold or bad allergies and took a Claratin yesterday. Mistake. Kept me up most of the night. Got out of bed, showered and ate a yogurt and banana. Drank coffee and water on the drive down to the race.
Arrived early, walked and jogged, chatted with friends.
