Swim
Comments: My swim was good. Usually in this race I have always gone out real hard and am barely able to breathe by the end of it. This year I told myself to just take it easy and keep my arms moving consistantly. That is what I did and I had a great swim. I think my swim training helped as well. I started to incoporate continous swim intervals into my training and I think that has made a difference. I train that way to simulate the starting and stopping of race day. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: Had a great first transition. Suit came off real easy. I put my helmet on and grabbed my bike and away I went. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: I had a great bike ride out there. I was flying. My legs were screaming slightly but I knew I had to push it. I only got passed by a couple of people when the Sprint course merged with the Olympic course near the end of the ride. The people that passed me were from the Olympic distance race. They were really pushing it. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: I had the fastest T2 time in my age group. Everything went smooth. No complaints. Run
Comments: The distance of the run was off. After the race speaking to some of the Olympic distance athletes that were wearing a Garmin on the wrist they said that they ran almost 7 miles instead of 6.2. So I have rounded up my distance to 3.5 miles. It was a different organization this year that was running the event and the run seemed long to me. I have run this course in the past and it was not right. My feet are a little sore from running barefoot on the some of the gravel sections. It will take a day or two for them to recover. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: I got something to eat and drink and I waited for results to be posted. I had an Oh Shit moment when the first page of results were posted and I saw my name near the top. I really started to freak out when I saw that I was number one in my age group. I stuck around for the awards considering I have never won an award in a triathlon before. It was nice to win my age group and even nicer to win at my all time favorite race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing. Event comments: This is my favorite race to do. The scenery is great. I am sure the race organizers will get the distance right on the run for next year. This is a great race for someone who wants to try a triathlon. Walking around staring at people like I usually do. I like to people watch.
I jogged around a little bit to get my blood pumping and to loosen things up.
While waiting for my swim wave to begin a woman walks up to me and asks me if I remember her. I am thinking to myself, I am in Wisconsin wearing a wetsuit getting ready to begin a triathlon and someone I don't recognize asks me if I know them. She starts naming people I know, where I have worked in the past, where I work now. I am thinking WTF???? She finally reveals herself, she was the girlfriend of a friend of mine back in the early 90's. It appeared she had lost some weight. I don't think I ever would have guessed it was her.
