Pre-race routine:

Up at oh-dark-thirty and on the road for a 90 minute drive. Ate oatmeal and drank some coffee. Arrived at the State Park at 7:00 but waited in the line to get into the park for 20 minutes. This is a great race and is well organized but I think that the race director should jack the fee for the race up by $3 and then ask the park to let everyone in for free!
Event warmup:

Was a little frazzled as I like to have 45-60 minutes to gauge my surroundings, set up transition, take a 4 minute run to wake the legs up and a 200 meter swim. I got the 200 meter swim in but that was it. Also, I went to get body marked and I was supposed to pick up my chip. I was marked but no one offered me the chip and I forgot to ask. I didn't realize I was chipless until I took OFF my wetsuit in T1. I think my exact words were HOLY CHIP (except I didn't say chip). I realized that I was competing "for the fun of it" ... I'm not a "for the fun of it" type guy so I was pretty frustrated.
Swim

Comments:

I went pretty hard during the swim because I knew I had the wetsuit on. I have been pretty slow in the pool so far this season for 3 reasons: 1) I stink at swimming, 2) I am only swimming twice a week right now, and 3) my shoulder has been sore and I am trying to ease back into swimming this year. I would guess that the wetsuit brought me under 2:00 / 100 but I would estimate that I completed the swim in 12-13 minutes. The 3 guys in front of me in my AG were 10:58, 11:14, and 10:45 respectively. I know this is the area in which I can improve the most. The swim was uneventful. There was some "contact" initially but not too bad.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I thought this transition went well with the exception of getting the wetsuit off. I need to purchase some of the silicon spray as I hear that the legs come right off when you use that stuff.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 11.2 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Again, I wish I knew what my time and pace were! I felt like I had a very strong ride and after re-setting my watch at about mile 1.5 it claimed that I averaged 21.3 MPH for the last 10 miles or so. I was probably a little slower for the first mile and a half so I would guess that I average about 20.5 MPH. This is strong for me and I was very happy with my ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Felt pretty good about this transition. I went sockless and it worked out perfectly ... no blisters at all. I can't imagine that anyone could have been much faster than me in T2.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.1 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

I come from a running background so this is my strongest event. I passed quite a few people during the run and only 1 or 2 people passed me in the beginning of the run. There was a girl who passed me very close to the start of the run and then I passed her somewhere between mile 1 and 2. When I finished the race I turned around to see who was behind me so that I could look up their race results and get an idea how I did overall. It was her ... number 115. Her run split was 20:46 so I would guess that I was somewhere between 20:50 and 21:00. I had hoped to average sub-7:00 minute miles so I think I was successful.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a good bit and then went back to the finish line to watch my friend Rich finish. This was his first tri and he went off in the Novice wave. He did quite well for his first race (1:21:19). I had a couple of bagel sections and checked number 115's race result and determined that my time was somewhere around 1:08:30.

Event comments:

Fortunately, the race director had someone recording numbers as they crossed the finish line. I suppose that this is insurance against the chip system failing. It worked out well for me as I did not have a chip but they were still able to record my overall time and place me appropriately in my AG. A time of 1:08:28 is good for me as I had hoped to come in under 1:10:00. They do a really good job with these Tri the Parks races and I will be back for a couple more this summer. I would really like to finish "on the podium" for one of these. I missed it by one spot on Saturday. Next up: Florida 70.3!
