Run
Comments: This is Canada where the races are marked in kilometers. I decided to monitor my pace every 5 km, and try to keep around 30:00/5k. The weather was perfect.. cool and overcast, and a misty rain started about 20 minutes into the run. My first 5k was 30:16, right where I wanted to be. I can never remember the details of the run to correspond to the miles but I know we ran across a cement bridge over the river around km 9. My second 5k split was 29:48. I had my watch on lap function so I only saw the current split time and not the total elapsed time. From km 10 to the end was along the canal which is totally flat. You can see the runners on the other side of the canal heading towards the finish and we could hear the finish line cheering at one point. From km 10 - 15 my time was 28:56 and I felt great and was passing people. We had to cross the canal which meant another bridge and then the last 5k is along the other side of the canal. My last full 5k time was 29:00.. I'm now at 20 km with only 1.1km left I'm trying to do the math in my head and I know if I don't slow down I'm going to come close to beating that 2:07. I cross the mat at 2:09 and stop my watch... then hit the recall button to see my real time is 2:04 and I am in total shock. I can't believe I did it... this is 13 minutes faster than last year and my best time ever for a half marathon!! I totally lose it and am crying in the finish chute... what a sap. What would you do differently?: Nothing.. I did my best !! Post race
Warm down: The full and half marathoners were finishing together so it took a long time to get through the chute, get the chip off etc. As soon as I stopped running I was chilled so picked up my bag and got my jacket on. Did a few stretches, then headed to my car. What limited your ability to perform faster: nothing Event comments: I love Ottawa... it was my first marathon in 2000 and I've run the full twice and the half four times. I'll be back next year. My husband was participating in an event (his hobby) at a local venue so we had planned to head north on Saturday and camp overnight, and I would leave Sunday morning for a nice short 30 minute drive into the city. However he had some mechanical difficulties and ended up working on the machines all day Saturday. So I went to bed at 11:30 Saturday night and got up at 4:30 to make the 2 hour drive to Ottawa. Arrived just in time to watch the marathon start, then picked up my packet and shirt and hung around the start area waiting for 8:30. All day Saturday I had weird discomfort in my left knee so I took 2 advil and an allergy pill at 8:00. Two puffs from my inhaler (for EIA) at 8:10 and dropped my bag off at baggage check. It was quite cool and looking like rain but I decided to go without my jacket and just wore a tank top with a t shirt over it. Multiple trips to the bathroom as usual and got to the race start at one minute before start.
None. It always takes 5 minutes walking to get to the start line and I wanted to start this run slow so didn't do any real warm-up.
