Swim
Comments: This swim seemed to take forever. We had to swim out 6 bouys, turn and come back. I was with 2 women for at least 1/2 the swim, then we got separated by the wave ahead of us. I had a fast start then just settled in for the rest of the way. I think I could use a warm up and probably could go faster, but I kept thinking that I didn't want to use up too much of my energy. I have a hard time with pacing in a race, especially one longer than a sprint. What would you do differently?: Do a warm up swim. Push it a little harder. Transition 1
Comments: I think this includes the run from the swim to the transition area? Either way, I was 9th out of 12 on this part of the race! Yikes...This is one area I need to work on. I need to remember it's not "break time", but is "get your crap fast and go time"! What would you do differently?: Practice this. Act like I'm in a race. Bike
Comments: Had a good bike. A few problems though. My number slid back and was in the way of my bottle in the cage, then it stared flapping around the tie was rubbing on my leg. I removed it toward the end of the first lap and stuffed it in my pocket. Also, as I was coming down the bridge on the first lap, I hit a bump and my aerobars dropped down. The aero bottle then hit the front tire and moved to the side. This was a little stressful coming down the hill at around 27mph. It also made me paranoid, as I felt like I had to keep my elbows on the pads and hold on tight to the bar ends while pulling up on them, in order to prevent them from slipping down. The pace seemed about right for me. I could have gone harder, but it would have been at a cost, I think. I didn't drink as much as I planned, as my stoopid aero bottle was all messed up. What would you do differently?: I maybe shouldn't have gone on the new bike without riding it more...but it was so fun and fast, the pros outweigh the cons! Transition 2
Comments: Again, I was about the slowest one in my transition. I saw Jonathan and was telling him about the aerobars and bottle, and just taking my time. I lost about 5 minutes total between t1 and t2. What would you do differently?: Practice this...go faster..remember: it's a race! Run
Comments: I started out doing 8-8:15, but by mile 3 I was about 9:00...tried to speed it up, but I think I did one 10 min. mile in there, which slowed me down. I wasn't miserable, but I was hot and ready to be done by mile 5. The water was hot at all the stations. I stopped at each one and drank about 1/2 a cup of hot water. I had a gu just before the run while on the bike, but I probably could have used another about mile 3 or 4. What would you do differently?: Carry my own water and take another gu. I spent 49 min of the run in zone 5, so I don't know I could have given much more. I was a little disappointed yesterday after seeing my time, but I think it was about the best I could have done on this day. Post race
Warm down: Saw fcollada and billcarb..found Jonathan. Stretched and got my stuff. He took my bike to the car, I went to the shower and washed my hair, then changed into clean, dry clothes. This was a good move! Drank some recovery stuff. Jonathan drove home and I took a little snooze. Got a bean and cheese burrito...then slept for 2 hours on the couch. What limited your ability to perform faster: Hmmm...my body hurt the day before the race. My calf had me worried, my back was tight...it was hot...The heat probably hurt and then my transitions. I did this race last year as my first oly and felt miserable. I felt pretty good on this one, even though this year was only 4 min. faster. Event comments: Good group of folks that put on this race. My only complaint is that they started about 15 minutes or so late, which in south florida can make a huge difference in the heat. I heard the announcer say "It's 91 degrees out here right now", and that was just after I finished. The post race food is less than exciting and the water was all hot on the run. Not cool, not warm, but hot. Otherwise, a fun race in a really pretty venue. Last updated: 2007-05-01 12:00 AM

Got up at 3:30am to have breakfast. Ugh. I have a hard time eating that early, so I drank 2 boosts over the course of 45 minutes. Got dressed, packed the car and we drove the hour to the race. Tried to eat a bar on the way, but yuck. Sipped on water and a juice a little. Picked up my packet and set up my transition. Made sure my chain was on the ring!
Basically a walk to the start and some light stretching. The race was supposed to start at 6:30, but it was about 15 or 20 min late starting, so I probably could have done a little swim, but I didn't.
