Swim
Comments: One word to describe this swim: chaotic. Ok, in more detail...before I got into the water, I was really nervous and excited! As soon as I got into the water I felt like I couldn't breathe. I was so nervous I think my breath escaped me. Also, when I started to swim I kept running into people's feet. I hated that. I swam far to the left and just started treading water so I could calm myself down. I kept talking to myself telling myself I would be fine, I am a good swimmer, etc. As I was treading, I looked towards the bouy and was blinded by the sun and my googles. My goggles were all foggy, and for some reason I didn't want to take the time to fix them even though I was just treading there like an idiot. So, I started swimming again, this time to the far right. In fact, I was so far out there on this swim that two times I got tapped with the paddle to head back into the left. I could not swim straight! Really, I could hardly see through my goggles..I felt like a kid without their glasses on. Anyway, once I started swimming (maybe 10 minutes in) I started to catch my breath and get the rhythm of things. After I would get tapped to move back in, I would hit someone's feet and then swim out again. I definitely have not learned how to swerve in and out of swimmers. Before I knew it, I looked up and there were the stairs. Phew! It was over! What would you do differently?: DEFINITELY swim in the water before hand to warm up and catch my breath. Also, practice more in open water and figure out how to navigate the swim better. Transition 1
Comments: For my first transtion, this was fine. I had no idea what was normal and had never practiced this. Again, it just felt chaotic. I thought you couldn't run in transition with bike so I just walked quickly. What would you do differently?: run with bike! maybe practice it more in my head. Bike
Comments: for my first race, i feel fine about this. I am so bad on the turns though. I nearly come to a stop just to turn! For every four people that passed me, I maybe passed one. I rode hard though..for me. I was feeling great for the first 8 miles or so, and then I had to pee. I was also SO thirsty, but since i am such a novice, i didn't know if i could drink and ride at the same time. but, much to my suprise, I DID IT! I was going so slow, but I did it. It would have been funny if I crashed over my own thirst. Anyway, I saw Amy and I think this made me ride harder. Finally around mile 15 I saw a porta-potty and jumped off my bike. I asked the cop to watch my bike which was dumb, because who was going to take my hybrid when everyone was in the middle of a race on their own fabulous bikes, but oh well. When I got off the bike to pee i had the weirdest feeling in my right leg, a tingle that went up and down it...like a pinched nerve feeling. It went away once I got back on. After I peed i started to ride way harder. it's pretty amazing how a full bladder can hold you down like that. i finished feeling good. What would you do differently?: train more. one day in the far future when i can afford it, get a better bike. Transition 2
Comments: again, didn't think i could run with bike, so i could do better here. also, got confused on racking my bike. i racked it in the wrong place so i had to switch that. took a lot of water and some gu and headed out. What would you do differently?: again, maybe just more practice. Run
Comments: the first mile of this was tough, but I saw Rivi and that helped. Also, someone said to me, "GREAT PACE". At first I felt good...raced proud...and thought this was because of all of my training...then, i thought, oh no...what if i am going too fast! so, i think i slowed it down a bit. around mile 2 i really felt in the groove of things. maybe my gu kicked in, or maybe my legs just felt more used to the run instead of the bike. i felt fairly strong, just HOT. I stopped at every single water station and drank water and gatorade and poured about 3 waters over my head every time. i had that dry hot face feeling so i knew i needed to stay wet from past experiences racing in the heat (peachtree). i think the water really helped me to stay cool and i felt i finished strong. What would you do differently?: not freaked out about the fast pace Post race
Warm down: drank 3 beers, ate 3 pieces of pizza, loved on my husband and celebrated with friends. no stretching until after 7 hour car ride...oops. What limited your ability to perform faster: i feel fine about my first one. this was a learning experience. Event comments: cant wait to do it again next year! Last updated: 2007-05-01 12:00 AM

woke up at 5:00, got dressed, tooled around until warren woke up. drove 45 minutes to st. pete, freaking out the whole time that we were really late. in the future, i will give myself more time.
the day before the race was incredibly stressful as well because the timing belt on our car went out on the drive now. we ended up sitting in the middle of nowhere, florida waiting hours for it to get fixed. i was supposed to practice in the open water that day, but i was lucky just to get to st. pete in time for registration! we got there at 6:45 15 minutes before registration closed! phew...that was scarey. i was freaking out that we wouldn't make it when we were stranded...but thank goodness we got there!
not much of a warm-up. hung out with amy and warren before the race began. waited in a REALLY long line for our race chip and talked to some other triathletes while we waited. Everyone was really friendly, giving lots of good advice. i thought it was a bit rediculous we had to wait sooooooo long for our chips though. in the future, I am definitely DEFINITELY going to swim a bit in the open water right before i jump in.
