Pre-race routine:

Finish off a plate of spaghetti the night before. Really worked at hydrating the 48 hours prior. Had to work the day before, on my feet at the Hospital for 12 hours. Drank a couple slim fasts in the morning, small bowl of cereal and a 10 oucne drink of NO Explode
Event warmup:

Found the porta potties...stood in line...made my way to the mass of humanity on the street. Positioned myself behind the 3:30 hr marathon pacer. A moment of silence for the victims of the Murrah Federal Bldg bombing, Star Spangled Banner and a exciting start at 6:30 am.

Comments:

The first few miles went by pretty fast. The first mile was very crowded. I stayed with the mass of people huddled around the 3:30 pacer, after the first water stop, I pushed ahead of the group, so I didn't have to run with so many people to either side. Took on fluid at every stop and slowed to a fast walk to drink. Right before mile 8, the course splits and my pacer group that was right behind me, continued north. I would run the rest of the course with HR pacing only. Around mile 8 had a slight nagging pain in my right knee. Looked at my HR monitor and it was at 150, backed my HR back to the low 140, my fears about my knee getting worse consumed my thoughts for the next mile or so. I had some Chocolate GU with me, so I got that down and took on some fluids at the next stop. There were a few people passing me between mile 9 and 11 and my HR was still mid 140s...increased my pace a little. With 2 miles to go, I felt very good, still just a slight pain in my right knee, with 1 mile to go, I picked up the pace. I knew I wasn't going to hit my 1:44 goal, but wanted to see how close I could get. The run down Broadway was great. Tremendous support from the volunteers and great after race food. It was a great day.

What would you do differently?:

Train a little more. Nutrition plan worked well.

Course: Oklahoma City, mostly flat with a few slight grades. Start running downtown at the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial, work east to Bricktown and then turn north. The 1/2 marathon takes you past the Capitol and through a few historic neighborhoods. The finish is down Broadway.
