Comments: We went out at what I felt was a relaxed pace, Phillip and I dropped into a pace line with about 6 of the C4 riders and i just stayed in the draft where I could. Imagine my suprise when at SAG one I checked and we were averaging over 20 mph. I felt good so decided to go for the 50 mile loop. We picked up some other C4 riders leaving the SAG and rode onto SAG 2 maintaining the 20 mph pace. That is a record pace for me in any conditions. We left SAG 2 to head back northwest and hit a series of rollers for about 15 miles. We were riding with a fairly large group and I ended up in the center of the group. I had a big anxiety attack when we slowed abruptly crosssing a bridge while passing other riders. I decided to drop back and ride solo from there rather than risk another crash. I dropped into the smaller chain ring and spun into the 3rd SAG. From there it was just a relatively flat 10 mile spin back to the start. My back was starting to hurt so I just softpedaled it back in. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Great Ride, Great Company Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Crashing/Surgery in June and subsequent recovery in progress. Event comments: My riding club (Covington/Conyers Cycling Club) was a sponser of this event and we assisted by raising funds, supplies, painting routes, etc... Both of my teenage sons and myself were involved in the process and I am glad it turned out well. Next year I hope to ride the entire 100, health and fitness permitting. Got up, had coffee and drove down to Project Adventure in Covington. Met up with the other C4 guys (as sponsers they set up a private parking lot for us, pretty cool) and registered. As Ive been out with the broken collarbone it was good to see and catch up with so many people.
This was to be a re-entry ride for me, after 7 weeks out with injuries I was not sure what distance I could handle so I was just playing it by ear. My 15 year old son was riding with me and he wanted to do 50 so I was going to try it if my shoulder held up.
