Muncie Endurathon
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 41m 15s
Overall Rank = 99/114
Age Group = SM35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/9
Pre-race routine:

12 oz Gatorade A.M. 3 hours before event start,
Whole Wheat English muffin smothered in Peanut Butter 2 hours before start washed down with 4 oz Gatorade,
1/2 clif bar and other 4 oz Gatorade 1.5 hour before start.
Event warmup:

light stretching, walking around
Swim
  • 11m 46s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

SW wind @ 6mph
nearby pontoon boats fumigated swimming area
had hard time catching non-polluted breaths.
could have passed pack, stayed back
looong run up the hill to transition - winded before bike
What would you do differently?:

be more aggressive
learn to breathe on both sides
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
What would you do differently?:

put shirt on over neck and not pull it down
no socks
Bike
  • 50m 17s
  • 12.3 miles
  • 14.68 mile/hr
Comments:

WSW wind @ 9 w/ gusts @ 20mph
bottle: 1/2 water & 1/2 gatorade A.M.
1 frozen gel pack
What would you do differently?:

get water bottle w/ integrated gel despenser - less mess
otherwise nothing different
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

previous athletes didn't rack their bike correctly leaving no room for mine - paused to look for official but couldn't find one, racked bike anyway with seat shoving other bike out of my spot
What would you do differently?:

Rack it and move on without question
Run
  • 35m 14s
  • 5 kms
  • 07m 03s  min/km
Comments:

too fast at start - got winded early (2nd hill/ 1st k)
had a couple of first-timers catch up to me and they set the pace
Shins - ow.

What would you do differently?:

run faster,
wear HR monitor (or at least my watch),
less walking
get song or cadence stuck in my head
Post race
Warm down:

walked to and from boat dock (1 mile round trip)
general stretches
8oz water
6oz gatorade
1/2 clif bar

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nerves going into first major event solo
need to train harder on bike - my ride was terribly slow
because of the mass of people, it was a little overwhelming and slightly confusing.

Event comments:

A few voluteers clueless & glued to their (personal conversation) cell phone when approached.
Swim- breathing in fumes from nearby pontoon boat not good: affected breathing and performance
Overall was a good, clean, fun event. I know next year will be better and I'll be better prepared for the 2nd annual Sprint.
