Pre-race routine:

Arrived in Chattanooga the night before. We stayed at the Sheraton downtown. Very nice place. Old hotel. No parking (valet only) - this irked me.

Meet up with my peeps from NAMC at Tony's. After a very long wait, the natives got restless and we decided we had better get them feed. I'm really glad Heather organized that despite the issues - it was good to at least share a beer with everyone. On the way back, we ran into the Teeds and had dinner with them and their tricycle motors. It turned out really nice.

This was the first race that I couldn't sleep the night before. I think it was the fact that the hotel was not next to the finish line like I thought it was. Woke up at 5am, ate oatmeal. Having the family there added to the stress, but oh well.

Got body marked (badly I might add), got my timing chip and got setup. Again, not getting my bike ready the night before (due to crazy hotel parking) was an issue as I was scrambling around. I almost forgot my gels and did forget to put my race # on my helmet.

Finally, I felt as ready as I was going to be and got onto a bus to head to swim start. Saw Neal, Courtney, Kraig, Steven and a few other BTers on the Bus. Chatted with the guy next to me.

We sat around a big football field for what seemed like an hour. They had PA issues which meant the race instructions were being shouted. When the race ref got up, it was a joke. He had a quiet voice and used the time to educate everyone on all the penalties that they are seeing this year.

(I'm sorry, but if you are entering a 1200 person Olympic race and you DON'T know what drafting is, please proceed to a Sprint race, do not pass go, do not collect $200).

Finally, my section was called (I was #94). 25 people at a time down a dock. Slide into the water. Water was the PERFECT temp.

They started everyone at 3 sec intervals. This was just about the perfect swim for me. Best swim of the 3 tris I have done. Work in the pool is paying major dividends here. Sighting was awesome. Breathing was awesome. No one really to draft on. Didn't get tired at all. I got passed by what felt like 2 people and passed what felt like 12 people.

Mostly I stayed just to the left of the bouys but a few I went on the outside due to the curves and one I swam right under.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a dream swim. I finished the swim in the top 19% of the field.

Due to my f'ed up setup, I forgot to roll my socks in half and forgot to rest bike computer (did this on the run out of T1). Oh well. I fumbled with getting them on. On the plus side, this was the first tri that I didn't use a bucket to sit on. Worked out great.
What would you do differently?:

This winter, I will start to work on a flying mount.

When I drive up GA 400 in Atlanta, I always think how cool it would be if they closed it off and we did a bike race on it.

So this was close. Riding in the fast lane of a highway. I heard many complain post race of the hills. They didn't bother me. The only issues that I had was feeling like I had to pee the whole bike. I tried to pee on the bike but couldn't.

What would you do differently?:

My HR says that I pushed myself just enough to have some left for the run (167 is supposed to be my LT - I need to retest this as it's a few months old now). My brain says I could have pushed the bike a little harder; I'm afraid of doing this and sacrificing my run.

Good news is that I had no issues: no dropped chain, no almost wrecks.

I finished the bike (total time) at the top 48% against the field. I definitly gave up too many spots on the bike and this shows the work I need to do on the bike.

Got out of shoes on the last downhill coming into town. Flying dismount right at the line. Worked out awesome. I loved it.

Stairs and Hills at .5 going out and mile 5.6 coming back in. Couldn't get race number belt on at first. I really liked the run course on miles 2 to 5. Saw Fun Killer, and the College Funds at the last water stop. That was major motivation when I needed it. Fun Killer tried to throw water on me. That got me smiling.

I am pretty disappointed with the results of this run. Comparing this time with Russell State Park Oly, I was 9 seconds slower per mile. I think marathon training with no real speedwork plays a huge part in this.
What would you do differently?:

Need to introduce speed work. The fall off between the first 3 miles and the last 3 miles is something to note. HR data says I pushed myself to the limit. Run LT is 187 and I was pretty much right there the whole time.


Post race
Warm down:

Wasn't in the mood for food right away so I had some water, sports drink and beer. It was really nice hanging out with all the NAMCers. I love those guys and gals.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike and Run.

Despite how I feel about the run, my work needs to be on the bike. I finished the race right at the top 50% mark against the field. So I only gave up 2% from bike to run but a whopping 29% against the field from the swim to bike.

Event comments:

I really liked the race and course and would do it again. Definitly stay at the Residence Inn or Courtyard since they are right at the finish line/transition area.
