Swim
Comments: Felt more tired then expected. I started on the far left in the front and was away from everyone pretty much the entire first half of the swim. What would you do differently?: Draft off people, perhaps stay closer to other people. Transition 1
Comments: I took my time on the transition. There were no foul-ups, I just had a lot of stuff to put on and take off. My bike shorts were much harder to pull on over wet legs. Also, I had sand on my feet that I needed to rinse off with my water bottle after socks were half way on. What would you do differently?: Put my bike shorts on more efficiently or perhaps think about getting tri shorts. Bike
Comments: My chain came off when going up one of the hills. I was shifting into my easiest gear in the front and the easiest in the back and it came off. Got off and fixed it pretty quickly but someone else's chain also came off and they didn't know how to put it on and her chain was stuck under her gears so I helped her fix her bike. Overall, according to my HRM, that added ~4 minutes to my time. I also started getting a really bad knee pain in my left front knee. My hands also went numb. What would you do differently?: I think my pace was alright. I will have to figure out proper positioning on my bike. As far as helping the lady, I figured that I'd want someone to do the same for me. Hopefully no one will be near me if this happens again. Transition 2
Comments: I came in behind someone just walking their bike so I had to walk behind her. Luckily my transition area was set-up right next to the in/out so I only had to walk about 50 feet or less to my station. I had bike grease all over my hands so I ended up getting it on my nice white shoes. :( What would you do differently?: Perhaps try jumping off moving bike or riding with feet on top of shoes? I don't think I will worry about that right now. Run
Comments: I hardly drank anything but I had too much fluids in my stomach I could feel it sloshing around. I poured water on my head and that was nice. I think I took it out a little too fast (~7:50/mi-8:10/mi pace). I started to feel signifcantly tired after .74 miles. Thank gosh it wasn't the full 3.2. I think I either took it out a little too hard or else was just tired after that bike. I passed more people than people passed me. And I pushed hard when I could see the tent. When I crossed the finish line I felt like I was going to throw-up so I continued jogging a little bit and drank water. After 15 minutes I started to feel better. What would you do differently?: Start off slower and pace myself better. It felt hard but I don't know how much of that was due to biking 14 miles beforehand (which I had never done before this race) or by taking it out too fast. Post race
Warm down: Didn't really warm down, just jogged for 5 more minutes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Helping the girl. Taking the run out too fast, perhaps. Not being a good biker. The knee pain on the bike didn't help. Event comments: I think with more training (since I have only trained for 8 weeks and 3 out of the last 4 weeks I couldn't train due to food poisoning and a pulled quad) it will be more fun. It was still very hard. It felt like a hard lactate set. I will want to do another one, but as of right now I can't see myself willingly putting myself through that much pain too often. Woke up at 5:00am, tried to eat scrambled eggs and a bagel (not hungry), listened to music, left at 5:40. Made it there by 6:15am when transition opened. Went to the bathroom.
Warm-up swim in the lake for 10 minutes. Snacked on a half of a bagel with water. Stretched a little bit.
