Swim
Comments: Well, I thought this was the best race I've ever swum, but it ended up being about 2 minutes slower than my first sprint a month ago. Go figure. I think the course may have been a bit long, given that fact, and others' comments. Yeah, that's it; the course was long and I'm really not that slow! This was a good swim for me; kept going the whole time, sighted really well and didn't let a few kicks to the head slow me down. I'm just too dang slow, though, and need to improve. What would you do differently?: This was really my best swimming race yet (though 2 mins slower than my pr), so not much. Maybe be more aggressive and push harder? Transition 1
Comments: Great T1, 29th fastest overall. I wouldn't change much. Bike
Comments: Course measured 14.1 miles on my computer and mapmytri.com, so I averaged 21mph, not the 18.6 according to the chip. This was my best bike ever, and I only came in 12th in my age group. Yikes. I felt pretty weak coming out of the water and knew it would be a tough ride, and it was. The first lap was tough, but I basically rode the 2nd lap chasing another guy, passing him, being passed and then finally passing him again. I was able to average 23-24 on the flats, so that was good. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure I could have done anything differently. I pushed as much as I was able. Maybe get aero bars and clipless pedals? Train more on flats? Transition 2
Comments: Their chip timing was messed up, so don't know my real time. T2 was very good, though. Small transition area helped. Run
Comments: Sucked big time. I knew within a few steps that this would be a struggle. I'd gone in hoping for sub 8-minute miles, and I averaged 9:30. Yikes. I just literally had zero energy out there, it was brutal. I did start feeling better about 2 miles in, but by then it was too late. What would you do differently?: Not get a cold a few days before the race. Also need to do more speed work. Just run more. Was really exhausted. Post race
Warm down: Bent over and nearly died. What limited your ability to perform faster: General fitness level. I'm improving, I mean 10th in my class is better than 24th, but man there are a lot of areas to improve. Swim: more efficient stroke and general technical improvement needed. Bike: ability to maintain higher speeds for longer times. I can push hard for short burts and hit 28 on the flats, but only maintain 23. Run: need help everywhere. I was the fastest 39-year old sprinter there, though. So that's a bit of consolation for me. Event comments: Might want to have multiple waves, as all the sprinters went at once, some 150 of us. Swam for 5 minutes about 15 mins before Olympic wave went off. I think this really helped me.
