Pre-race routine:

i wouldn't say i have much of a routine, though i really should, since i'm 7 races into this whole running thing... i ate pasta for dinner last night and drank a ton of water. got up about an hour and a half before we needed to be in the city and ate cereal and kept drinking water. we left the dog at home this time, he makes it hard for jorge to manage brianna and the camera. jorge dropped me off at 67th and i walked to pick up my number and timing chip while they parked.
Event warmup:

met up w/jorge and brianna and decided to do a little warm up jog up what would be the finish chute and stretched a bit. then we headed to the start. tried to call jen, but got no answer. right as we got onto central park west, carol called to tell me nora's and her finish time at their race and i was so happy for them both!
i lined myself up between the 9 and 10 min/miles, kind of looking around for familiar faces - but recognized noone :(

Comments:

the first two miles were on central park west and i was literally giddy to be running on the streets of new york. all my intention to start out slowly and save some energy for the end of the race went out the window, because i was so jazzed and happy to be running down the street with some 4 thousand women in a race that really is an historic event in itself - being the first road race for women only.
i really enjoyed participating and i hope to meet the challenge issued by someone during the awards ceremony to come back next year with two more entrants - carol and nora, whether you're reading this or not: that means you!
my pace slowed a lot on the hills, humidity was a major factor and i'm at a loss as to why there were so few water stations, only every other mile and spaced out pretty far from one another. i was dying for water at one point. that was rough.
i walked where i felt i needed to - mostly on the uphills - the ole' pain in the knee showed up after mile 4
then in the last mile, a nifty leg cramp in my calf, i had to stop and stretch it out.
it was great to see jorge and brianna in the finish chute - i think he got a picture of me - its so great to have a cheering section!
i missed my goal time by four minutes - that stinks, but overall i enjoyed myself and am happy with how i did in what was essentially my first stand-alone 10k race

What would you do differently?:

start out slower
get a knee brace!

Post race
Warm down:

ran into my friend fiona - who ran the more half with me and another friend, cree who i haven't seen in ages - they both finished way ahead of me, but they both agreed that it was a tough, hot race.
grabbed water and a bagel but had to buy a gatorade to stave off a headache, which is here now as i type this report (grrr!)
we hung out for a little while, but my leg got really stiff and i begged jorge to just take me home so i could ice it

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat, humidity, leg pains

Event comments:

super fun, supportive environment, i'll be back next year...
only two more to go and get qualified for nyc marathon 2008!
